For all its flaws I can never hate Hazbin Hotel or Helluva Boss because god at least it feels like it's coming from a place of genuine passion.
There are so many shows now that just feel like a company came up with the most marketable and likely to succeed ideas. Yes they end up being more polished, and have technically better writing but they just feel so sterile sometimes. Like it's been perfected and analyzed so much that there's no joy in it, it's being made with the idea of being sold.
As much as the character designs might be off-putting to some people, at least it feels like someone had a lot of fun creating them. Husk is maybe my least favourite character design, but holy sht someone had too much fun creating that. I LOVE that they look like deviantart OCs, it makes it feel so human in a way. Like AI could NEVER have created this nonsense.
I can never hate a passion project, I'd so much rather something that has a ton of flaws but has joy pouring out of every part, than something that feels so over-analysed and manufactured and sterile.
Fck it I'll say it, I like that Viv doesn't kill her darlings. I know that's a big complaint and yes technically I see why it's not good for a smooth plot. But I don't care, I like that it feels like a weird fanfic, I like that the pieces that technically should be deleted are kept just because she likes it. I'd rather watch a weird amalgamation of plots someone refused to delete because they liked them so much over something a company thought I would enjoy.
In the era of AI I think I've found a new appreciation for fanfiction writing and passion projects.
