i’ve suddenly just got this image of davey riding a bike around manhattan — there was a “bike boom” in the 1890s where cycling became super popular and bicycles also developed greatly into very close to what we know now — because like. it’s a long way to and from his school, this long walk that he has to do alone while his folks are at work. and his parents can’t help but notice in the evenings when davey’s walked home from school and he’s all scuffed and bruising (“ran into a…spot of trouble with some classmates,” he offers stiffly), so it only takes a few occasions for his pa to shell out and get david a secondhand bicycle.
