āŖno cuz im thinking that since stede didnt leave himself any money so the revenge crew is going to have to steal themselves a ship. stede asks them "by any chance, have you seen blackbeard" they shiver at the name, tell a horrible story about torture, and stede frownsā¬. in disbelief, he says "no, he's changed. he wouldn't do anything like that." and oluwande says "people do crazy things with a broken heart."
edward "i dont feel fear" teach crying his eyes out cuz his lover left him confirming his worst fears about himself and his relationships

Generational Trauma in OFMD
Entirely boggled to learn thereās a subset of #OurFlagMeansDeath fandom who think that Ed isnāt canonically a BIPOC character? Because they donāt say aloud that he is? My beige dudes, the actor is MÄori. They cast a MÄori actress to play his mother. This was not an accident.Ā
Taika has always been proudly vocal about his mixed heritage and the fact they canonically gave Ed a white father and a MÄori mother is so important in the context of Edās character. The show is set at Peak Empire, when England (and Europe) colonised everything.
Thereās a powerful thread of subtext of this history within her characterisation and this show doesnāt do anything accidentally: she is a house servant, trapped in poverty, abused and controlled by her white partner, and conditioned to believe that āitās not up to us, itās up to Godā.
For anyone unfamiliar with European colonialism, the role the church played in it is toxic. The stolen generations are a legacy of it: children of indigenous people abducted and forcibly cut off from their culture to be ācivilisedā through Christianity and assimilated into a white-centric culture. The entire system was a genocidal horror story perpetuated in the name of God for centuries in almost every single colony. The children were abused and conditioned to believe they were lesser, better than their heritage but still never good - āwhiteā - enough. āWeāre not that kind and never will beā.
So when Edās mother says āitās not up to us, itās up to Godā, that is the voice of a child of colonial violence repeating what she was taught by abuse and by rote to make sure she knows her humble place in the world order created by the Christian Empires. The fact sheās a servant is also so integral to this. The Christian schools trained the children to be workers but most specifically in low-level manual/domestic work. The people running the show didnāt want them getting ideas above their station, after all.Ā
Not a word of this show is incidental. The history is there if you listen to it and it makes the red silk scene devastating because we are seeing a woman from a colonised culture literally and metaphorically pass that trauma on to her son.Ā
Think of the first time we see the silk: it is immediately in the aftermath of Edās encounter with the French Captain. This is the moment when Ed is faced with the same level of racial abuse as Frenchie and Olu get from the white Navy officers in episode 1 - āmade by savagesā, āsilence, slave!ā āyour master may tolerate uppity behaviourā.
The Captain refers to Ed as āyour kindā, immediately designating him as something Other and Uncivilised by comparison to himself. Ed reels as if slapped at that alone, asking tersely āwhatās that supposed to mean?ā. The man derisively says āa rich donkey is still a donkeyā.
But no, sure, tell me thereās nothing inherently racist about a posh white man describing a brown man in terms of a beast of burden, something meant for manual work, carrying things for its owner and known for being beaten into submission. /end sarcasm. In many documents from that era, this was a common way for white (especially English) Europeans to write about anyone not white, regardless of rank, culture or history: comparisons with animals, beasts, lower creatures are all over the place.
Ed, unsurprisingly, does not react well. The fact that this is the thing to make him lose his temper for the first time underscores how distressing it is for him, especially when it segues into the flashback to his mother, repeating that same lesson to him.
The way these two scenes overlapped is so important because not only does it define Edās history but also demonstrates that - even decades after the fact - the legacy of generational trauma has not and will not go away.Ā
How to cope after a break up with Ed & Stede
after stede and edward stop fighting eds gonna be like "fuck.. sorry about all your books.." and stedes gonna be like "oh no matter i have secondary copies of every one" then he's gonna open another secret passageway and lucius is gonna be in there eating paper

TAIKA WAITITI AS EDWARD TEACH/BLACKBEARD Our Flag Means Death | 1x10 - āWherever You Go, There You Areā
best moment in ofmd is āwhatās her name?ā āed. his name is ed.ā and mary just smiles and hugs stede so tight. there is no sadness or surprise. instead, thereās happiness, relief, and realization.
a lot of people love this moment because itās when stede realizes heās in love. i love this moment because for mary, everything makes sense now. from her perspective, she was trying everything she could do to make the relationship work. she was sentimental, she gave him gifts that represented their devotion, she wanted him to spend more time with his kids, and she wanted to be close to him. but stede was always distant, holding back, and wanted to uproot the life they had for something different. mary must have thought there was something wrong with her. for years, she was slowly falling apart trying to save their relationship, only for stede to withdraw even more, and eventually abandon everything she tried to build with him.
but āhis name is edā changes her perspective on all of that. everything makes sense now. stede could never love her romantically. not because thereās something wrong with her, not because she isnāt enough, not because he hates her or the children or the life they had together, but because heās gay. she realizes that they were both trapped and unhappy. and she also realizes they can be free now, and they can love each other another way. i canāt imagine how healing that must have been for her.
yeah this an ofmd account now

i will literally never forgive lauren hussein montgomery for retraumatizing shiro every single episode, besmirching hunk with fatphobia, quarantining keith from the team, whittling lance down to his hormones, kILLING ALLURA, THE BLACK FEMALE LEAD WHOSE entire race was murdERED BY GENOCIDE when they COULd have just saCRIFICed the lions,Ā AND THEN WRITING 238942984 SOLITARY EPISODES FOR THE ONLY WHITE PALADIN BECAUSE SHE WAS HER FAVORITE CHARACTER
i think one of the things that annoyed me so much abt keith's arc was that it was so antithetical to actual healing......keith had abandonment issues and never felt like he could open up to anyone because his mom left, and instead of accepting that, moving on, and getting closure his mom just,,,, came back? which was such a weird wish fulfillment thing that didn't teach him to grow or accept what happened and accept his newfound familyāwhich especially sucked since he left the team to be with the Blade and isolated himself further instead of learning to love and cherish what he had.Ā
and then he found his mom and stayed there longer instead of coming back to the team and having some sort of realization about family and connection. there was no arc for him there, they just stuck him on a time warped space journey where he spent two years isolated with his mother as a confused deus ex machina for the Too Many Paladins Not Enough Lions dilemma which did nothing to further the plot or keith's development.
season 3 started out so strong because keith was thrust into a position of authority where he had no choice but to trust the other paladins and rely on them with faith and he really began to connect with them on a deeper level. but there was still so much left unsaid, even The Bedroom Scene felt kind of cut short and unfinished, like there needed to be a follow up.Ā
just when he started to get closer to everyone and break down walls between him and lance he left, and there was no discussion of it when he came backānothing to prove he had grown or address how he felt like he needed to flee the second he started getting closer to people. itĀ was just accepted and almost presented as a healthy choice? to run away when you finally start to feel loved?Ā
esp with shiro, the only person he ever felt close to, who was constantly near death and leaving him and then he was CLONED and his consciousness trapped and all along everyone thought that was shiro, logically that should have taken a HUGE ASS toll on keith? ANYONE with trust issues would lose their shit about that!!!! but there was never any conversation around that either.Ā
i think that was part of why klance felt so necessary because it would have been the ultimate culmination of keith's arc where be could not only learn to love and be loved, but really address his fears of abandonment and mend a relationship he never wanted to be antagonistic in the first place. keith NEVER let his guard down fully by the end of the show, and that was so disappointing to watch. there were brief lucid moments, but he didnt really change or grow much from start to finish, and even in the last seasons he was doing reckless, selfish things that hurt the rest of the team just like in the beginning with utter disregard, not to mention he barely had any interaction with his mom once they got back.Ā
