My beef with Turandot is that the ending was so out of character. The entire opera was building up Turandots personality as this impenetrable ice queen and then in the last few «minutes» that is completely undone. No build up or understanding of it at all.

What makes it worse, Calaf kisses her forcefully and she falls for him after that. Not only so incredibly out of character for Turandot but the EXACT OPPOSITE of what she has been preaching the entire opera.

Then there is Liu, who Puccini most likely used as another outlet for his pain like all his other doomed heroines. When he died after writing her death, that tragedy was glossed over and forgotten, like she wasnt a major part of the opera beforehand. Calaf is too much of a simp and a barely nuanced character to be affected by Lius death except for a few lines before he continues on like nothing happened.

Poor Liu, she deserved better (still killing herself because that is important, but after). I think it makes sense that the story and music started to lose its quality after Puccini died.
