Emotional Hot Potato

Do you have that one person around who always has something to complain about? Has beef with someone for some reason and always seems to be in a disagreement with another for who knows what? You don’t have to carry their emotions! When someone wants to share a negative experience with you, they are usually trying to transfer what they are feeling either for validation or to release it from themselves. This is unhealthy because we are ALL responsible for what we feel, and need to deal with those nasty feelings ourselves. There isn’t anything wrong with seeking advice or a compassionate ear in times of trouble, but when the aim is to incite an emotional response, then it becomes manipulative and unfair.

The good news is, you can CHOOSE which information you want to retain or reject. When someone wants to throw their black cloud at you, just say “no thanks” and throw that hot potato back to them or drop it! It’s a very simple practice that gets easier the more you use it. Don’t carry someone else’s darkness; instead turn that inner light on and chase it away!
