I've thought about this... I think that it could really work as an isolation tactic disguised as a reward, honestly.

By which I mean, maybe demons know that having your memories erased provides some relief, and if you ask sometimes Gwi-Ma erases them... but he doesn't do it out of the kindness of his heart, he does it so that the demon in question doesn't have any real memory or knowledge of a life outside of Gwi-Ma's rule.

Like, Jinu resents Gwi-Ma in part because he remembers the life he had before, and knows that Gwi-Ma took him from that life. He has something it compare his present situation to. But if Gwi-Ma took his memories... what would Jinu know about his situation? He'd probably know that he made a deal with Gwi-Ma to get out of some desperate circumstances, and Gwi-Ma helped him, and then Jinu became his slave.

But with nothing to compare slavery under Gwi-Ma to, you see how that could work to force demons further under Gwi-Ma's thumb? If this is the only life they really know, and they were apparently desperate enough to make a deal with Gwi-Ma before... imagine how hard it could be to even conceptualize a good life away from Gwi-Ma.

I also like the idea that the Saja Boys in the movie have their memories erased, which is why they act more like husks who don't care about humanity. If they don't remember ever being human, why care about these people? Humans could become a much more distant concept. And besides, Gwi-Ma was the one to help them when times got rough--not their "fellow humans" apparently.
