History - Throughout history and myth there has been great confusion between Dragons and Drakons. This is understandable due to their similar physical features and the closeness of their names (they are only one letter off!). However it is important to know the difference between a Drakon and a dragon. One day it might even save your life.
In Greek Mythology Drakons are great serpentine beasts that usually ravage huge swathes of country side and obliterate whole cities in mere hours. There have been many instances of Drakons and each one has its own subspecies as no two drakon are the same. All are extremely dangerous and not to be taken on lightly.
The Lydian Drakon - The Lydian Drakon was a drakon that originally terrorised the city of Lydia near Turkey. It has been known to be the oldest and most dangerous kind of Drakon. It was originally killed by Herakles at the request of the Lydian Queen Omphale. It shares similarities with the story of Damsen and the Maeonian Drakon and it is highly likely that Herakles’ story is derived from Damsen’s.
The Lydian Drakon was last seen in New York when it was sent to fight Percy Jackson and his army of demigods. It was eventually slain by the daughter of Ares Clarisse La Rue, who stabbed it in the eye with her spear Maimer.
The Maeonian Drakon - Around the time of the first Gigantomachy, the Maeonian drakon attacked the village of Maeonia (in modern-day Turkey). The naiad Moria's brother Tylus accidentally touched a serpent, which then attacked Tylus, coiled round his body and suffocated him; Tylus was not his first victim. Moria only could helplessly watch her brother die, but then Damasen, a Giant son of Gaea, arrived on the spot; Moria implored him to help and he killed the serpent, hitting it with the trunk of a tree he tore out of the ground.
Then a female serpent, the slain monster's mate, appeared and used a magical herb, referred to as "Zeus' flower", to bring the dead serpent back to life. Moria then used the same herb to revive her brother. Damasen's killing of the drakon was an act his parents could never forgive. Gaea opened up the Earth and imprisoned him inside his father's realm, Tartarus. The Protogenoi allowed him to continue farming, but he was never allowed to see the sun or the stars again; it was their way of showing him how meaningless his life was. While in Tartarus, he was given the endless task of slaying the Maeonian drakon.
The Aethiopian Drakon - The Aethiopian Drakon is missing from any famous myths and this is likely because it originally lived in Ethiopia, however in recent years it has been seen to be more active in the region surrounding Camp Half Blood. In the war against Kronos it tried -- on numerous occasions -- to invade Camp Half Blood but was frequently unsuccesful.
Physical Description - Drakons have been described to have no legs and to crawl in a similar way to a snake but is still very fast and has a paralyzing stare that can freeze opponents out of sheer terror. They have been known to grow to over two hundred feet long, and can secrete an acidic venom that can corrode armor. Its scales are extremely durable and virtually indestructible, making the monster exceptionally hard to destroy. The best spot to attack a drakon is its soft, vulnerable eyes.
The Maeonian Drakon has been described as a beautiful creature, of green and yellow, like "sunlight through a forest canopy," and its eyes were a shade of sea green. It has been described as easily as long as a subway train.
Some can breathe fire but this is very rare.
Most can secrete acidic venom.
They are often over two hundred feet long and can grow to longer.
They have immense strength and speed.
They have scales that are harder and more durable than titanium making them virtually impossible to kill.
They only vulnerable spot is their eyes.
