That being said:

1. Said the n-word (we are all thoroughly white) quietly because he believes if you say it quietly, it's "funny," or it's a quote then it's okay.

2. Embarrassed me in front of an entire group of people I was trying to be friends with because he misunderstood something I said. (We went to a Hans Zimmer concert (This was before I knew he was a tranphobe. I no longer listen to his music) and he mistook me repeating that Dark Phoenix—their favorite score to play—was their favorite movie).

3. Claimed that Christianity has a monopoly on good morals and that there should be individual schools for each race and religion.

4. Claimed that the patriarchy wasn't real after me and my sister mentioned that the Barbie movie was good.

5. Claimed feminism is full of radical misandrists who want men to be below them.

6. Got in an argument with me reasoning that Drag Queens shouldn't read to kids because they "tell kids to mutilate their bodies."

7. Supported Charlie Kirk and wore a cross after he died.

8. Is an film elitist.

9. Building off the last point, throughout a trip to visit another brother and his wife, he repeatedly tried to convince me that I couldn't say that my favorite movies were good because they, "Have no plot and they flopped at the box office."

9.b This led to many arguments including one where I told him to shut up and he told me, "Never to say that again."

9.c When I eventually told him to shut up again (At our Grandmother's Birthday (After I excitedly told our grandmother that she would get two candles on her cake because that's all she had (He sarcastically said, "Oh boy, two candles."))) he put the lid on the cake and would not let me give our Grandmother a slice until I apologized.

9.d I did not apologize because he was being a man child at the ripe age of 25 and he had to take a walk afterwards. (Mind you, I got scolded for his outburst.)

9.e Continuing the trip to visit other brother and wife: He then insisted that we watch his favorite movies the entire time and acted like a child when I pointed out that Gladiator is a retelling of Hamlet.

9.f We went to see the live action How to Train Your Dragon movie. He could not stop the running commentary on how Astrid's actress couldn't act and was an all around nuisance for the entire movie.

10. Walked out of his best friend showing us her favorite movie because he found it ridiculous.

11. Called me disgusting for being a monsterfucker.

11.b Claimed I would join a Satanic cult and marry someone who looked like the devil.

12. Called me mentally ill for finding fictional characters attractive (I asked my other other brother who the most attracive person was in his favorite anime).

13. Criticized me and called me mentally ill for being excited about Date Everything coming out and wanting to play it with my other other brother.

14. Keeps trying to help in situations that he should know don't involve him.

15. Before Mamdani became mayor of New York, he was convinced that if he got elected he would impose Sharia Law.

16. Walked around during the Covid pandemic because he thought it was stupid and that he wasn't going to get sick (he worked in a pharmacy).

16.b Hugged my Grandparents while they had Covid and then came home to the rest of us.

17. Said the only things he looks for in movies is crude humor and gore.

18.b He hated that Rachel Zegler was playing Snow White and complained constantly when Halle Bailey was cast as Ariel.

Behold. Evidence! (Note that I have not read the Illusion of Living yet, but I do own the book and I have read nearly every other book that has come out. I just hate Joey Drew and don't want to read his autobiography.)

Sammy Lawrence is an award winning musician. He is incredibly talented and probably should not be working for a failing animation studio that's being held together by "just a pencil and a dream."

There is no reason for why Sammy Lawrence would stay at Joey Drew Studios as long as he did before the accident when he swallowed living ink. Why wouldn't he leave and find work at a different place? Somewhere where he wasn't overworked and probably underpaid?

The answer is that he couldn't find another job. Nobody wanted to hire him because they didn't want to hire a black man, much less a biracial one.

I've had the long standing headcanon that Joey Drew is a racist man. He's one of those people who says that he's not racist, as he hires employees from a vast amount of backgrounds, but when it comes down to it, he will prioritize his own image and the image of his company over the employment of his POC employees.

Notice how the two black employees he has—Sammy Lawrence and Norman Polk—are kept away from people. The only people who really go to the Music Department are the musicians and apart from them, no one would see Sammy. Norman says it himself, "It's the nature of us projectionists to seek out the dark places." Norman is a person who is rarely seen, and when he is seen, people call him creepy and don't like being around him.

My next point is how people treat Sammy. A lot of people—including myself—upon reading Dreams Come to Life read the scene between Sammy and Thomas Connor where Thomas says, "I bet you're not used to giving people like me respect," and Sammy responds with, "What's that supposed to mean?" and assumed that Thomas Connor was a POC and Sammy was racist. But, hear me out, it's the other way around. Every person we see who talks about Sammy always talks about how rude and demanding he is. Even Buddy Lewek does it, but when we think about the first time Buddy met Sammy, Sammy had every reason to be rude and demanding.

As a refresher, Sammy had tried to get music from a closet in the Music Department, but a pipe of living ink had exploded and got ink not just all over him, but all over his music. There was no telling how much music was ruined by that pipe bursting; not to mention, a lot of people would be pissed if a pipe of anything sprayed stuff on them.

It took Buddy one interaction of Sammy being understandably angry which ended in Buddy cleaning up the closet by himself and immediately wrote Sammy off as a bad person. He never assumes something like that about any of his other coworkers, it's just Sammy.

And before you say, "Firework, why was Buddy so nice to Norman then?," remember that he met Norman when he first came to the studio and talked about how he was creepy. He was only nice to Norman after Dot was nice to him first. She basically gave him confirmation that he was "one of the good ones" and Buddy trusted him afterwards, but you can still see his internal racism shining through at the end.

When Buddy finds the different people wrapped in the ink at the end of the book, he finds two of his coworkers from the Art Department and Norman. He tries to save one of his fellow Art Department workers, but he completely writes off Norman, simply saying, "No one would notice if he went missing." I get that Norman stayed in the shadows for the most part, but that part also reads like, "No one would care if he went missing."

Now for the last two points: Why would Sammy Lawrence be an award winning musician if racism was so prevalent? and Why would Susie Cambell be so nice to both Sammy and Norman if racism was so prevalent?

Sammy Lawrence, as much as I hate to say it, has a very white passing name. When you hear someone say the name Sammy Lawrence, you assume that he's a white man. The spelling helps too. If it were spelled Sammie Lawrence, more people would have assumed that he was mixed. It also helps if you don't submit a photo of yourself when submitting your work. For people with ambiguous names—whether it be Black/White or Man/Woman—it is much more common for them to get hired than those with distinct sounding names (Ex. Johnny is much more likely to get hired than Johnnie). The people deciding who would get rewards would see the name Sammy Lawrence and assume that he was a white man. It would only be when they announced the awards and Sammy stood up and accepted it that the crowd would realize who he was.

Next, Susie. Another headcanon of mine is that Susie Campbell and Allison Pendle are both Italian women. Susie is a direct immigrant who moved with her parents when she was a kid. Due to this, she would have an American accent, but she would say certain words with an Italian inflection. It would be just enough for someone to notice and be able to tell she was Italian. Allison, on the other hand, is of Italian descent. Her grandparents were probably Italian immigrants, so she has no trace of an accent or anything that would immediately give it away.

This would not be a problem for Susie, but around the thirties, prejudice around Italians grew due to Mussolini being a fascist and World War 2 starting. As I was saying earlier, Joey Drew is 100% the type of person who would throw his employees away as soon as any kind of trouble arose surrounding them. He probably noticed that people tended to avoid Susie more and knew about her slight accent, and instead of keeping her around and letting her keep her job, she was fired and replaced with a different woman that, despite being Italian too, wasn't as obviously Italian as Susie.

Now to the question: Why was Susie so kind to Sammy and Norman? She could relate somewhat to a bit of their experience. Her entire life, she probably had to deal with questions surrounding her parents and whether she had ties to the mob. She probably got bad looks when she walked around the studio. She noticed that Norman and Sammy were treated badly too and decided to be a friendly face.

Something I didn't mention before is that despite being overworked, Sammy also stayed because he had something to prove. That's why despite Susie being one of the only friends he had in the studio, if he had directly opposed Joey and fought to keep Susie on staff, Joey might have thrown him out too. Like I said before, Sammy probably had a hard enough time getting hired by Joey. The chances of him finding another job in music were low, so in his mind, it was better to let his friend go then be on the streets with her.
