Chapter: Threshing
I continue to follow the pull as it grows stronger. It leads me to a moss-covered, almost perfectly round clearing. The clearing is framed by orange-brown colored deciduous trees, with some tall pines and fallen trees in between. I realize that I must have been on the move for several hours, for the sun is now high and its light falls directly onto the clearing, while the trees around it cast short shadows. The moss and the leaves of the trees cover the clearing almost completely. As I enter the clearing, I take care not to stumble over the stones and tree roots that stretch across the ground. When I reach the middle of the clearing, the pull is suddenly gone.
So suddenly that I flinch in shock. I spin around my own axis; there is no sign of a dragon anywhere.
"Shit, shit, shit," I mutter as I become increasingly panicked. Have I wasted my time? I didn't imagine it, did I?
"Dammit!" I scream it out and kick a large root.
"Fuck!" I groan loudly afterward as I realize that the root is much harder than I expected from a piece of wood. It is hard as a block of iron. The pain is shattering.
And then the root moves.
››Did you really just kick me?‹‹ growls a rough and simultaneously melodic voice.
I whirl around in the direction in which the root is now moving and look straight into two huge amber-colored eyes. Sulfurous breath flows toward me.
"No?" I croak out, while it slowly and painfully dawns on me that I didn't take my frustration out on a root, but on the tail of a dragon. A large, brown dragon that is coming closer and closer to me with its massive head.
"I mean, yes? But not on purpose!" I quickly add and raise my arms in the air. "Please don't roast me, I thought it was a root."
››A root? Like from a tree!?‹‹ I hear the dragon's shocked voice, yet his mouth does not move an inch.
››Does this,‹‹ he whips his mighty tail up and stabs the sword at its end vertically into the ground of the clearing, ››look like a root to you!?‹‹ His head jerks back.
I gasp for air. A brown sword-tail.
Please, please don't roast me, I think to myself.
But the dragon is already opening his massive mouth and slowly rolling his tongue forward.
I hold my breath and close my eyes.
A warm blast of air sweeps over me and almost knocks me off my feet. But no pain. Only warm air. Who would have guessed that death feels so peaceful?
››Hahahaha! You should see your face!‹‹ His ringing, rough laughter rumbles through my skull.
I am not dead.
I am still alive.
I snap my eyes open and stare at the dragon, who stretches his neck upward and emits small fireballs vertically into the air above us while he is still laughing.
››Ha,‹‹ fireball, ››ha,‹‹ fireball, ››ha,‹‹ fireball.
My heart sinks into my pants, so deep that it drags my stomach down with it and bile rises in my throat.
No! No! No! I will not puke in front of the dragon. So I pull myself together and swallow down the rising bile.
The dragon's laughter falls silent and he lowers his head down to me. ››Better that way. I'm not sure if I'd still want to take you with me if you puke on my claws.‹‹Â
"What!? How do you know!?" I blurt out in disbelief. I am sure I didn't say that out loud.
By the gods.
"You are in my head," I mutter as it slowly becomes clear to me. "You are my dragon!"
››Wow. You're smarter than you look, Ridoc. And so possessive right away. Now hurry up and mount. My little human.‹‹Â
The dragon now steps fully out of the thicket and stands on the clearing. He turns his neck toward me and looks at me expectantly.
››Come on. Front, back, or over the tail, feel free to get creative.‹‹Â
I grin broadly. It's him. He is the dragon who waved at me during the presentation, in all his glory and with his massive sword.
››Yes, I am, and thanks. But if you keep this up, I'll slip on your trail of slime before we can take off. Up with you, Gamlin!‹‹Â
"You know my name?"
››I'm in your head, forgotten already, genius?‹‹Â
"True. But I didn't think my name at all." I cross my arms and almost dare to look at him somewhat challengingly.
››Do you really want to argue here now or are you finally going to mount? Perhaps before I change my mind? I can still ... how did you say it again? Roast you.‹‹Â
"Yes. No. I'm mounting!" I say determinedly while I search his body for the best way up. On his front leg facing me, a row of spikes protrudes slightly. I should be able to find a hold on those with my hands and feet. His shoulder height is at least as high as the ramp of the Gauntlet, and I managed that after all.
››Yes. I saw that. You can do it, and now move!‹‹
Without hesitating, I run toward him. I find good traction on his scales with my boots, and I can pull myself up using the spikes with my hands.
I make it. Slightly out of breath, I reach his shoulder, directly behind it is the hollow where I am supposed to take my place. On all fours, I work my way forward to my seat. When I raise my gaze, I look again into his amber eyes, which glisten golden in the sunlight.
He blinks. ››Well, that can certainly be done a bit more elegantly. Next time, maybe you try to stand up and not crawl around. You're not a dog, that looked embarrassing‹‹, his tone sounds amused.
"I'm sorry, I'm doing this for the first time," I say and shrug my shoulders apologetically.
››Me too. Now you'd better hold on tight, little human.‹‹
