ngl it does bother me to watch white swifties finally address taylor Swift's racism that Black women and people of colour have been talking about for almost 2 decades. I remember in 2009 seeing Black culture critics be run off social media for calling out the way Swift so emphatically used the Kanye West awards show incident to position herself as a victim in the way white women have defined their status against Black men in the US for centuries. I remember the Wildest Dreams music video being called out by Black people GLOBALLY in 2014 for romanticising the aesthetics of African Colonialism, and swifties doxxing those people. I remember in 2015 when the Shake It Off music video dropped and the countless articles written by Black women and women of colour about how racist it was for Swift to (again) position herself as so pure and innocent by comparing herself to Black people, specifically the faceless bodies of Black women in that video. I remember seeing my Black mutuals being called conspiracy theorists in 2016 for calling out the manufactured outrage when the whole Kanye thing started up again with that lyric he wrote about making her famous, only for it to be revealed that she intentionally let it all kick off and tried to cover it up that she had okayed the lyric. I remember watching Black swifties be doxxed and bullied for pointing all this out and more and expressing disappointment at Swift's silence during Black Lives Matter. I myself have been targeted and harassed by Swifties for years for pointing out her white feminism, for pointing out all her actual friends were white and/or racist. A few years ago when I was posting sources about Taylor Swift trying to bulldoze Olivia Rodrigo's career with lawsuits, a 17 year old woman of colour, and pointing out how Swift does not do this with white artists who are her peers, the harassment I experienced from Swifties drove me to self-harm. And that's all without mentioning her silence on the genocide in Gaza for the past 2 years, her associations with MAGA people for the past 5 years- all of which have been called out by people of colour the entire time and those people of colour were also harassed over calling a spade a spade, a racist a racist. I could go on, but you get the idea. I'm glad white people are finally seeing what Black women and people of colour have been telling you about this woman for nearly 20 years. It's super interesting that they had to hate her art before they were willing to agree. I don't think this is a problem with just Swifties so the point I'll leave the post at is this: we will never be able to have meaningful and effective communication about racism in art and arts industries more broadly if people are only willing to discuss that racism when art is "bad".

While I’m devoting my blog to the letters of Fiona Apple today, I might as well share this one that she wrote to me.
I met her very briefly before a show back in 2000, only a couple days after that Roseland meltdown, and I handed her a letter wherein I told her I was in my school’s gay-straight alliance and was wondering if she would write a sentence or two of support. “Could you say some nice stuff about gay people?”, basically.
Quite frankly, 16-year-old me was much more interested in interacting with a celebrity than building an alliance between gays and straights, but Fiona took me at my word and wrote me this really sweet letter. The show was on a Friday, and I got this via FedEx the following Tuesday, and she even apologizes for it taking so long. For much of the 12 years that have passed since these events transpired, this has been the most exciting thing that has ever happened to me.
I’ve met her a couple times since, but I never got a chance thank her for taking some time out and being so thoughtful, especially for a lonely weirdo like me. Maybe someday.
Hello Bill,
I got your letter a few days ago, but this is the first chance I’ve had to sit down and write (it’s my day off) Of course, I’d love to help – sign me up. As far as a few sentences go, here’s what I’ve got – I hope it’s OK:
It’s hard to conjure up some new profound way of commenting on this issue – I’m so tired of it being an issue at all, and I suppose I’m lucky, because I see the truth so clearly. All I know I want my friends to be good people, and when my friends fall in love, I want them to fall in love with other good people. How can you go wrong with two people in love? If a good boy loves a good girl, good. If a good boy loves another good boy, good. And if a good girl loves the goodness in good boys and good girls, then all you have is more goodness, and goodness has nothing to do with sexual orientation. A person who loves is a righteous person, and if someone has the ability and desire to show love another – to someone willing to receive it, then for goodness’ sake, let them do it. Hate has no place in the equation; there is no function for it to perform. Love is love, and there will never be too much.

it's really sad to think about that male characters in media will always get grace and sympathy and be consistently praised for being "such a well written character" when he's done some fucked up things and people will brush it aside because He's Traumatized and He's A Flawed And Interesting Character. but female characters who can also be flawed and interesting and have gone through their own traumas that would explain their behavior, but once they do something the audience wouldn't like, they turn on her. and that she's Pure Evil or She's Annoying and that she doesn't deserve any sympathy to the point where they're wishing her to die. and it really shows that a female character would be loved by the fandom if she was a guy. and that a male character would be hated if he was a girl. and that's not even that far off reach! because it's true!
It’s actually wild how the writers threw away all of Blair’s growth just to force her back with Chuck. They made it clear that with Dan, she was strong, mature, and grounded — but with Chuck, everything good in her vanishes. She turns into the absolute worst version of herself, and they acted like that was romantic. How ironic.
Can you imagine the heat?? Badass af
How could you forget all the cool heavy metal ladies!? The metal scene of Botswana is NOT just a boys club
Botswana Metal aesthetic is something I never knew I needed until it was shown to me.

"lupita nyong'o can't be helen of troy because helen was greek and there weren't black people in ancient greece"
DO YOU THINK THESE MOTHERFUCKERS DIDNT HAVE BOATS. THIS ENTIRE MOVIE IS ABOUT ONE OF THOSE MOTHERFUCKERS AND HIS BOAT
do you think these people can read
Best comment I just saw "Helen of Troy was perfectly cast, because all these men are fighting about her."
Also, literally from the Trojan War:
He was the subject of a lost epic as well:
