Last meal in the south.Â
Delicious steak (of course), chicken, grilled peppers, onions, and potatoes, and best of all a bean, a quinoa, and a tomato and onion salad. I've been missing my salads.
Cooked for us by the generous family of our guides in Temuco in their beautiful home.Â
Curanto pt. 2
So delicious. My favorite part were the stuffed calabazitas, which are the little green pumpkins. They were stuffed with cheese and meat, it reminded me a bit of my dad's stuffed peppers but a totally different flavor. I ate two whole ones plus so much meat, sausage, potatoes, salad, steamed apples, and a cheessy-pea stuffed gourd. Needless to say I could hardly move afterwards.Â
El Curanto This was awesome. A Curanto is tradition in southern Chile (and Argentina) of burying food underground with hot stones that have been heated in a bonfire until they're red. The meal cooks for a few hours and when it is ready it's unburied and eaten. Traditionally the food cooked is seafood but we were further inland in Bariloche and instead we had beef, sausage, steamy gords, pumpkins, carrots and potatoes. There was also some salad, bread, and delicious wine provided from above ground. The day of the curanto we had just hiked up a large hill/small peak to get to this amazing panorama of the Mapuche territory we were visiting (I'm including a photo of the view from the top). When we got down to the bottom we'd worked up an appetite and watching them dig up this incredible meal was one of the best ways to get excited to eat.Â
