could you expand on the disparities between jason’s initial and later characterization?
… My time has come
Thanks for the ask! I’ll focus on preboot, since n52/Rebirth was admittedly fairer to Jason and what reproaches I have against the reboot aren’t of the same nature. Let’s roast post-crisis tho:
Starting with the well-known “"fact”“ that Jason was a brash, arrogant, impetuous hot-head. Coming from Starlin and weeell reinforced by pretty much every writer that followed.
For a change, have some Jason following instructions to stay put even though he’s clearly bummed down about it; demonstrating feelings of self-doubt and inadequacy like every Robin did; thinking before he acts and coming up with well-thought plans; recognizing when his skills are lacking and how he can help best even if that means he won’t be in the middle of the action; and overall being the polar opposite of the character that was built with the sole intent to be victim-blamed.
[The New Teen Titans (1984) #28 & #26 || Batman (1940) #377]
[Batman (1940) #411 || Detective Comics (1937) #563 || The New Teen Titans (1984) #29]
Jason initially isn’t some dumb brat eager to break teeth, he often participates to the resolution of a case and provides valuable insight. ‘Tec #566 is a good example among others. Winick was on point by showing Jason as a tactician/planner first and foremost.
Long story short we went from the kid who’s given Robin to the one who breaks the costume out the glass and claims it for himself.
[Batman (1940) #409 || Nightwing (1996) #103 (Year One)]
Even Starlin had the decency to have Dick give his costume to Jason come on. If we’re treating that dude’s work as the reference we should at least take everything into account and not just the elements that incriminate Jason… Starting with the fact that it was Jason’s mother who lured him to his death, not his anger or recklessness or whatever.
Oh yeah and since Starlin Jason has an innate mean streak, is overly violent, unforgiving, and pummels criminals well after they stopped defending themselves btw
[Batman (1940) #422 & #645]
Except Jason’s compassionate nature is one of his defining traits. Even with the woman he has every right to hate for she’s responsible for Bruce temporarily losing custody of him. Even with the dude he’s known for like 30 seconds.
[Batman (1940) #380 || The New Teen Titans (1984) #21]
Even with the man who killed his father.
[Batman (1940) #411 || Detective Comics (1937) #581]
Also Johns thought it’d be a good idea to have Jason destroy Donna’s memorial for some reason??
and i’m like
why
[The New Teen Titans (1984) #20]
how?
[The New Teen Titans (1984) #24, 26 & 21]
NTT#20 is one of my favorite issues featuring Jason btw. He is so insightful. He arrives at a period where the Titans’ put everything into question and the team cohesion is suffering. He sees Donna, current leader, emotionally vulnerable and crippled with doubts. And he, the youngest among them and the one who knows them the least, is not only able to get to the root of the problem but also to shine light into Donna’s head and provide comfort.
Donna made an extra effort to make him feel included & Jason was there for her in a period of doubt and that’s important for me.
I guess the reason I take issue against the “Jason was a bad seed” thing, blatant victim-blaming aside, is that it adds nothing to his narrative.
Jason went through a traumatic death & resurrection on many points, was indoctrinated with the League’s values, estranged from the people who loved him which helped in making him see Tim’s arrival and Joker’s staying alive as a lack of love from Bruce. He doesn’t need to be innately bad to justify his violent return as the Red Hood.
hey jay side of DC is there any comic you’d rec that’s NOT written by Lobdell? (already read under the read hood)
Do you want just resurrected Jason? Or are you interested in Robin Jason too?
Pre-Flashpoint (no Robin but I’ll add it if you want)
Nightwing Year One (I lied this one is Jason as Robin, but it’s the only one)
Hush
Batman: Red Hood - The Lost Days
Green Arrow: Seeing Red
Countdown [to Final Crisis]
Batman and Robin: Dark Knight vs. White Knight
Post Flashpoint
Batman: Death of the Family
Batman and Robin: Requiem for Damian
Batman and Robin: The Hunt for Robin
Batman and Robin: Robin Rises (this and the last two are vols. 4, 6, and 7 of the N52 run. You don’t need to read vol. 5)
Robin War
Batman and Robin Eternal
Batman (2016) #16
You could also read the Arkham Knight Genesis comics.
(Sorry for any spelling errors it is like midnight)
Everything above is seconded! and I love robin Jason so ROBIN JASON!
The DC retroactive 80′s special is okay but it features a more ret-conned Jason Robin, one that has felt the weight of the victim blaming nature of DC trying to excuse their act of child murder! It is still pretty good anyway though!
Every Jason Todd fan should read Superman Annual 11 (otherwise known as ‘for the man who has everything’) A pre-crisis issue that could fit in any of the continuities where Jason saves the trinity!
Don’t forget Jason’s sadly never collected origin! (Pre OR post crisis)
Post Crisis: For our traditional street kid Jason that we all know and love his robin days are issues 408-425. (Please read his original robin run for post-crisis BEFORE a death in the family, because while a death in the family would have you believe that Jason and Bruce were at each other’s throats most of the time, that just is not true.) The rather infamous Death in the Family story is batman 426-429
Pre Crisis: If you want to give pre-crisis Jason a try be prepared for a similar(ish) character with a completely different back ground. As originally in the pre-crisis continuity Jason todd was a circus kid whose trapeeze artist parents got murdered by Killer Croc(this is actually the reason killer croc was created) a gangster/crime lord. (Although Jason has a very different arc than Dick despite their overly similar backgrounds and his parents die in a very different way than the Graysons did) Batman/Detective Comics issues 357/525 (both of these are very small appearances but they are important lead in to his origin and are good to read if yu actually want to understand what is going on) to Batman 400 and detective 368 (although Jason doesn’t appear in either 367 or 368 so those can be skipped in my book!)
The key thing to remember when reading pre-crisis Jason is that the Batman comic and Detective Comics issues pair together to form the story line. You read the batman comic first then the detective issue then go to the next batman issue and the next detective issue after that so on and so forth until you run out of pre-crisis batman and detective. PrCJason has some really cool story lines as well (In my admittedly dorky and biased opinion) He tangles with one of Dick’s old enemies, he and dick actually have a good relationship (Dick wants to adopt him himself at first! And GIVES robin to him!) as well as an entire custody battle arc between Bruce and a reoccuring female villian named Nocturna, and his run culminates with him tangling with the league of assasins. The huge bonuses to reading these comics besides Jason are twofold: You will love Vicki Vale, and there are some pre-Morrison-character-assasination-Talia appearances!
Also:
I feel it is prudent to draw attention to how down right GOOFY retro-Roman looks!
Also part-2:
“When a woman says no she means no!” *elbows subordinate who won’t leave her alone* ~Vicki Vale, 1983
the outlaws~XD
I wish we’d see them two in the new Red Hood, looking good and snazzy in Jason’s casino TT
