THE SUBSTANCE 2024 | dir. Coralie Fargeat
10 things I thought about while watching SOCIETY OF THE SNOW
Based on a true story that's colder than your ex's heart, Society of the Snow crash-lands into the Andes, and let me tell you, it's a frosty ride.
This retelling finds more than just a simple tale of the human spirit's perseverance. It's like turning a survival story into a philosophical exploration â move over, Bear Grylls, we're getting deep.
Director Bayona keeps the focus on the characters, making the production effort play a game of hide and seek. It's like a magic trick where you forget about the behind-the-scenes chaos and get lost in the snowy drama.
While other shows try to balance the ordeal of being stranded with the trauma of adult survivors, Society of the Snow is like, "Nah, let's stay in the immediate chaos." It's the kind of commitment that would make a procrastinator proud.
It's like Survivor meets Ghostbusters â they survived the crash, and now they're dealing with something that goes beyond airline food complaints.
It's like the universe said, "You survived a plane crash â here's a sprinkle of divine intervention." Forget therapy; just thank the heavens.
Bayona's masterpiece suggests that the answers they needed were along the Andes all along. It's like they could have saved themselves a lot of trouble if they just took a scenic hike and stumbled upon life's revelations.
Society of the Snow earns a frosty philosophical exploration high rating from me. Why? Because surviving the Andes isn't just about getting a participation trophy; it's about pondering the meaning of life while freezing your toes off.
Plane wrecks and personal growth are the ultimate power couple. It's like a romantic comedy, but with less romance and more frostbite.
It's not just a movie; it's a frostbitten journey of survival, spirituality, and wondering why they didn't just take the train.

Have you ever attempted a heist, and did it involve stealing back the time you spent watching Lift?
FUNNY STORY (not really that funny)... after watching Lift (should've stayed grounded) I watched Society of the Snow...and while it's probably the most touching story I have watched this year...I could not quite help but think about how ironic it was that I watched a film about a plane heist and then watched a movie about how people tried to survive a plane crash...
and then if given the choice...I would probably like to be a character in Society of the Snow and freeze to death after a plane crash than watch Lift again.
Did Poor Things hit a nerve?
Nothing hits a nerve like induced poverty my dear one...
If given the chance, would you don the spider-man suit or opt for the anonymity of a spandex-clad alternate universe?
I've always wanted to try on the suit...I think it would be a great alternative to SKIMS.
please tell me you shed more tears during Logan's farewell than during your last breakup?
I would have to say that both contained the same amount of litres of tears...Logan's farewell was a sad potion, and my break-up was a rage-infused tonic.
Do you have an ex with superpowers?
My ex was Jewish...does that count?

Did Scott Pilgrim's lack of a proper job hit a little too close to home for you?
As much as I try to stay away from men who lack ambition, I must say I am pretty impressed that Scott was able to score someone like Ramona.
But while on the note of his ambition, there's so many way that ScoTt could have monetize his skills...HAS HE NEVER HEARD OF TWITCH?!
10 things I thought about while watching LIFT (2024)
It boasts a cast so star-studded that they could probably outshine the $500 million in gold they're trying to steal. It's a shame the charisma of the actors can't elevate the film as high as their lofty heist ambitions.
It delivers a last-minute twist that feels like a desperate attempt to distract you from the visual unpleasantness and cheap aesthetic that plagued the preceding scenes. It's like putting a sparkly bow on a gift you never wanted.
The film's visually unpleasant and cheap aesthetic is a bold choice, as if the director said, "Why bother with cinematography when we can just throw gold bars at the screen and hope for the best?" Spoiler alert: it didn't work.
The forced romantic subplot between Cyrus and Abby is like trying to convince yourself that airplane food is gourmet cuisine â unconvincing, and you're left wondering why you even bothered.
The third act of Lift requires you to suspend your disbelief so often that it feels less like a heist film and more like a crash landing into the realm of implausibility. It's as if the scriptwriter's favourite word was "magic" â as in, "Let's just magic our way out of this plot hole."
Kevin Hart stars as Cyrus Whitaker, a master art thief who, unfortunately, couldn't steal the show. It's like casting a Chihuahua as a guard dog â adorable, but not exactly intimidating.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw's character, Abby Gladwell, seems determined to catch Cyrus, but I'm more determined to understand why she'd pursue a man who, according to the movie, constantly mutes his own charisma. Talk about questionable life choices.
The film's heist, set mostly in two planes and an air traffic control tower, is hampered by the blandness of its sets. It's like watching a magic show where the disappearing act involves the excitement disappearing from the audience.
F. Gary Gray's past credits include classics like Friday, Set It Off, and THE ITALIAN JOB (one of the greatest heist movies to exist) but with Lift, it's like he decided to take a break from craftsmanship. It's the cinematic equivalent of a Michelin-starred chef serving instant noodles.
For a thriller spending most of its third act in the air, Lift struggles to ever get off the ground. It's like a plane that forgot it was supposed to take you on a thrilling ride and decided to taxi around the tarmac indefinitely.
Lift (2024)
"Stop beggin'; you'll just make him more inclined to violence."
Burn Gorman as Cormac in Lift, 2024.
10 things I thought about while watching PAST LIVES (2023)
This film is like a game of cinematic hide and seek, where logic hides, and you're left wondering if you'll ever find it. Spoiler alert: probably not.
The fashion choices mirror the characters' journey through temporal twists. It's like each outfit holds a piece of their history, leaving the audience wondering if the clothing rack is a secret time machine.
It tackles love and destiny with all the complexity of a Facebook relationship status. It's either complicated, single, or stuck in a time loop â take your pick.
Nora and Hae Sung, the dynamic duo, should come with a warning for emotional whiplash. Are they soulmates, or did destiny misplace their GPS coordinates? It's like a love story with commitment issues.
The cinematic time-travel in Past Lives is more baffling than a quantum physics lecture. By the end, I expected a physicist to pop up on screen and offer an explanation â or a refund.
Predictability is for amateurs; this film is determined to keep you guessing until the credits roll â and maybe beyond.
The dialogue walks a tightrope between sounding profound and feeling lost in translation. I half-expected the characters to break into a philosophical debate over tea or a cocktail.
Nora and Hae Sung's reunion week is more awkward than a middle school dance.
Quick note on the soundtrack - I kept waiting for a dramatic crescendo that never quite arrived.
Last but not least and MOST importantly - SHOUTOUT TO THE HUSBAND FOR BEING SO CHILL ABOUT THIS WHOLE SITUATION (I would have left her.)
