FILM MOVEMENT PLUS PREMIERES BRITISH WWII CLASSICS
Commemorate the bravery of a nation at war and experience all the explosive drama across land, sea and air with four British World War II classics – newly remastered and streaming on Film Movement Plus!
One of Time Out Magazine's Top 50 Best WWII Movies of All Time!
Based on a story by Graham Greene. Bramley End, snug and safe, seemed far away from the perils of World War II. Little did the villagers suspect the grim events that would arrive at their doorsteps. Surprised by the lorry loads of Royal Engineers that rolled onto their village green, they had no reason to believe that these soldiers were disguised German paratroopers, and even less reason to be suspicious of Oliver Wilsford (Leslie Banks), their trusted town squire.
Directed by GUY HAMILTON (Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever, Live and Let Die)
The Nazis believed that no man could break out of Colditz Castle. A medieval fortress located in the heart of Saxony and situated 400 miles from any neutral frontier, it was the prison where the most rebellious Allied POWs were sent. Despite the threat of execution, British officer Pat Reid (John Mills) leads a daring escape attempt through the castle's subterranean tunnels.
One of Time Out Magazine's Top 50 Best WWII Movies of All Time!
The year is 1942. Along the barren North African coast where war has turned towns into smoking ruins, Captain Anson (John Mills), a commanding officer in the Royal Army Service Corps, is tired and thirsty. Separated from his unit while evacuating to Alexandria in a military ambulance, he takes on several passengers but soon realizes that one of them may be a German spy. Nominated for four BAFTA Awards and winner of the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1958 Berlin International Film Festival.
Starring John Mills and Richard Attenborough
It is early May 1940. In London, the population, lulled into an atmosphere of false security, goes about its business as usual. Even the official war communiqués merely report activity on the front. But Charles Foreman, war correspondent, knows better. As the Battle of France takes a turn for the worse, he joins the Merchant Navy and volunteers for the greatest mission ever mounted, the evacuation of Dunkirk.
RAFIKI PREMIERES ON FILM MOVEMENT PLUS
NewFest 2019 is here and Film Movement Plus is celebrating the 31st year of New York's annual LGBTQ Film Festival with the premiere of RAFIKI, Wanuri Kahiu's groundbreaking Kenyan film – a 2018 NewFest Official Selection – which was just named one of IndieWire's “Most Dangerous Films of the 21st Century” for its daring courage in “putting art and human rights above the law of the land.”
We invite you to experience this important film (along with other NewFest Selections) this week on Film Movement Plus.

“Bursting with life” (AV Club) and the colorful street style and music of Nairobi’s vibrant youth culture, RAFIKI is a tender love story between two young women in a country that still criminalizes homosexuality. Kena and Ziki have long been told that “good Kenyan girls become good Kenyan wives” – but they yearn for something more. Despite the political rivalry between their families, the girls encourage each other to pursue their dreams in a conservative society. When love blossoms between them, Kena and Ziki must choose between happiness and safety.

WHISKY GALORE! (1949)
Inspired by a true story. It is 1943 and the tiny Hebridean island of Todday is plunged into the depths of despair. Spirits are low – for Todday is without whisky. Then during a storm, a freighter runs aground which happens to hold a cargo of 50,000 cases of whisky bound for America. Soon a battle of wits ensues between the ship’s captain and the islanders as both attempt to claim the salvaged treasure.
THE MAGGIE (1954)
“Maggie” is one of the fifty-odd puffer boats which chug among the Western Isles of Scotland. The aging vessel is destined for the scrap yard unless her wily skipper, MacTaggart (Alex Mackenzie), can get her repaired. This seems a forlorn hope until he concocts a scheme for the humble “Maggie” and her crew of four to be entrusted to transport the valuable cargo of wealthy American industrialist Calvin B. Marshall (Paul Douglas).
CELEBRATE ALASTAIR SIM WITH THE PREMIERE OF FOUR CLASSIC COMEDIES ON FILM MOVEMENT PLUS
ALASTAIR SIM Born: October 9, 1900, Edinburgh, Scotland
Though he is perhaps best known for his role as Scrooge in the 1951 film adaptation of A Christmas Carol, Scottish character actor Alastair Sim is one of the best-loved and most prolific actors in classic British comedy. As we approach what would be the 119th anniversary of his birth, we invite you to enjoy some of his most memorable performances – newly remastered and now streaming on Film Movement Plus!
THE BELLES OF ST. TRINIAN'S, a film by Frank Launder
The unruly schoolgirls of St. Trinian’s are more interested in men and mischief than homework and hockey, but now because of two recent arrivals, even greater trouble beckons. Features Alastair Sim playing dual roles as headmistress Miss Millicent Fritton and her twin brother.
LAUGHTER IN PARADISE, a film by Mario Zampi
Practical joker Henry Russell leaves 50,000 pounds to each of his four surviving relatives. But his will has one last joke – they each have to undertake a task completely out of character within a month. Along the way they find that despite the riches, they are getting a lot out of the challenge.
SCHOOL FOR SCOUNDRELS, a film by Robert Hamer
Henry Palfrey tries hard to impress but always loses out to the rotter Delauney. Then he discovers the Lifeman college run by "Professor" Potter (Alastair Sim) and discovers the secrets of success. But does he have the courage to put all his lessons into effect?
HUE AND CRY, a film by Charles Crichton
The first of the Ealing Studios “comedies.” After discovering that his favorite comic is being used as a means of communication between a master criminal and his gang of thieves, teenager Joe Kirby sets out to alert the writer, played by Alastair Sim, and turn the page on the crooks.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HITCH! FILM MOVEMENT PLUS PREMIERES THREE HITCHCOCK CLASSICS
ALFRED HITCHCOCK Born: August 13, 1899, London, England
Alfred Hitchcock entered the film industry designing title cards for silent films. After working as a assistant director, he helmed his first feature in 1925 before going on to make a string of "thrillers" that would bring him worldwide acclaim. His 1929 film Blackmail is said to be the first British "talkie." One of the most influential filmmakers in the history of cinema, Hitchcock's career spanned more than 50 feature films over six decades.
Commemorating the birthday of the Master of Suspense, Film Movement Plus proudly presents three of Hitchcock’s early classics!
JAMAICA INN (1939)
Adapted from the Daphne du Maurier (Rebecca, The Birds) novel of the same name, Jamaica Inn was the last British film that Alfred Hitchcock directed before heading to Hollywood. This often overlooked gem from the Master of Suspense stars Charles Laughton, Maureen O'Hara, Leslie Banks and Robert Newton.
THE 39 STEPS (1935)
In this brilliant thriller, Robert Donat plays a London civilian who accidentally gets caught up in an attempted plot to steal vital British military information. Brought into the confidence of a counter-espionage agent who is later killed, he is forced to go on the run to save himself and stop a nefarious spy ring.
THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (1934)
Hitchcock’s biggest British success was remade by the Master of Suspense two decades later in Hollywood, but the original remains the definitive version. This vintage thriller includes one of Hitchcock’s most famous sequences featuring a breathtaking assassination attempt set during the finale of a concert at Albert Hall.

FILM MOVEMENT PLUS PREMIERES THE NEWLY RESTORED DOCUMENTARY CLASSIC FRANTZ FANON: BLACK SKIN, WHITE MASK ON THE OCCASION OF WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN FANON’S 94TH BIRTHDAY
FRANTZ FANON WAS BORN ON JULY 20, 1925 IN FORT-DE-FRANCE, MARTINIQUE
A FILM BY ISAAC JULIEN & MARK NASH
Winner, Certificate of Merit, San Francisco International Film Festival
“There is artistry in abundance in Isaac Julien's singularly ambitious portrait... He does justice to the complexity of his intriguing subject.” –The Guardian
FRANTZ FANON: BLACK SKIN, WHITE MASK explores the preeminent theorist of the twentieth century anti-colonial movements, a man whom Jean-Paul Sartre recognized as the figure “through whose voice the Third World finds and speaks for itself.” Isaac Julien, the celebrated black British director of such provocative films as Looking for Langston and Young Soul Rebels, integrates the facts of Fanon's brief but eventful life with his long and tortuous inner journey, restoring Fanon to his rightful place at the center of contemporary discussions around post-colonial identity.
IN HONOR OF HIS 82ND BIRTHDAY, FILM MOVEMENT PLUS PREMIERES HOCKNEY, A DOCUMENTARY FEATURE BY RANDALL WRIGHT
ONE OF THE 20TH CENTURY'S MOST INFLUENTIAL ARTISTS, DAVID HOCKNEY WAS BORN ON JULY 9, 1937
“Fascinating! Takes us inside the head of one of our greatest living artists.” –Vogue
“A whirlwind tour with firsthand knowledge of the man and his work.” –Artforum
“Entertaining...like most of its subject's art, Hockney is a sunny film.” –The New York Times
HOCKNEY weaves together a portrait of the multifaceted artist from frank interviews with close friends and never-before-seen footage from his own personal archive. One of the great surviving icons of the 1960s, Hockney’s career may have started with almost instant success but in private he has struggled with his art, relationships, and the tragedy of AIDS, making his optimism and sense of adventure truly uplifting. HOCKNEY is funny, inspiring and visionary.
