The term âpretty boyâ is incredibly loaded given itâs history of being used to call someone gay, but there are times when I want to use the term âprettyâ in reference to a man, goddamn it!
Sometimes I donât mean a handsome man, I mean a beautiful man, and I want the word to mean more than âfeminine featuresâ.
In my mind, listing just four categories of the many, many possible descriptiors of people should go as follows:
Pretty should mean flow-y and appealing
Cute should mean youthful and charming
Beautiful should mean mature and elegant
Handsome should mean hard edged and striking
Now all four words could be used in combinations with each other, in this model, and none of them would be based on gender as much as recontextualizing the meanings the words already have. Lace could be both pretty and beautiful, a charming young man could be cute and pretty, an older woman could be handsome and pretty and none of those descriptions would be cause for insult anymore.

in light of the recent influx of otherpaw hate, i have some Things To Say.
truly, there is no real difference between otherpaws and furries, except the materials they use to roleplay as animals. we should not be gatekeeping materials, guys. you cannot seriously call yourself furry-friendly if you are anti-otherpaw. but that is not my main reason for disliking the anti-otherpaw stance.
i find a laaaaarge issue i have with these âbut otherpaws are copying therians!!!!â folks is that the term otherpaw was created specifically to distance otherpaws from alterhumanity; to create a clear distinction that masks and quadrobics â alterhuman (therian included). which is a factually correct distinction. and folks whining about copying are (maybe unintentionally, maybe not) obscuring that distinction.
no, someone wearing a mask or doing quads is not inherently copying or mocking therians, because masks and quads arenât exclusive to therians, and they never have been. wearing a mask does not a therian make. wearing a mask does not necessarily have anything to do with therians. claiming that anyone who wears masks or does quads is copying therians is trying to claim exclusive rights of therians over masks and quads. itâs gatekeeping, yes, but worse than gatekeeping, itâs trying to cement masks and quads as inherently âtherianâ. which they arenât. which we have tried all this time to teach folks that no, not all therians wear masks/do quads, and just because someone does those things doesnât make them alterhuman.
but now these anti-otherpaw folks are regressing again to âmask = therian, therefore they must be copying and mocking theriansâ. which is factually inaccurate and damaging to what being alterhuman and being therian truly means. itâs what leads to the misinformation about the true depth of alterhuman identity on places like tiktok. and iâm so sick of it.
i know itâs not a widespread issue (yet). but given that iâve seen a handful of posts and comments about it, this is why i hope it doesnât become one.
(i have also alwayyyyyys found the argument âbut x is too similar to y!â to be a terrible argument against x. cause likeâŚ. who cares. things are allowed to be similar. humans and nonhumans alike are so incredibly numerous that you will almost never have a completely unique experience which no one else has ever had. our experiences overlap significantly because there are so many beings in this world. there is no fault in someone having a similar experience to you. you will not die just because you arenât in fact that worlds most special snowflake. i prommy.)

Maybe I should be ACCOMMODATED so I donât have to KILL MY BODY AND BRAIN over trying to do what abled people can do!! Maybe I DONâT have to work double as hard!! Maybe if thereâs the option to let me NOT work double as hard, I should have it, because Iâm already working double as hard JUST TO SURVIVE!!

that specific and very surreal emotion when youre in a genuinely SPECTACULAR mood bc youre indulging a lot in your hyperfixation but, separate from that, youre having a lot of trouble keeping up w a basic self care routine and simple responsibilities bc you just cant bring yourself to care much about them, so you have this background radiation of feeling kinda lazy and useless but you donât actually think about it consciously much bc youâre too busy having fun hyperfixating
Heyyy Iâm surprised and glad to see in the notes of this that Iâve apparently put words to something that people have trouble putting words to, but I wanna add something a little more productive to this as well.
My experiences arenât universal but this is how I deal with it when I get caught in the Fun-Unproductive spiral, as someone with ADHD.
Whatâs something manageably small that you can quickly do towards ONE responsibility/health need?
- Quickly washing your face?
- Drinking one glass of water?
- Eating something easy, like peanut butter, or a bit of cheese or lunchmeat?
- Checking your messages from your friends?
- Looking at Canvas?
- Checking your e-mail?
How can you make it as easy on yourself as possible?
- Listen to music or watch a video you like while you do it?
- Doing a task from your phone, so thereâs no extra steps (getting up, turning on computer)?
Get rid of imaginary limits.
- Do you think you have to do this at a certain time? Odds are, you could do it right now anyways. (i.e. brushing your teeth in the middle of the day, âcause thatâs when you remembered, still gets some plaque off!)
- Do you feel you have to do this in a certain place? Try doing it somewhere new (more fun, or more comfy, or just closer to where you are right now).
- Do you think âI have/want to finish [blank] firstâ? Itâs probably inconvenient (I know how it gets with momentum), but it might be for the best to contradict that this time!
- Do you think âI have to do this with NO DISTRACTIONSâ? Maybe this is an exception. Not starting at all is less than patchy progress.
If you still find yourself shrugging things off in favor of continuing to hyperfocusâŚ
âŚstop and consider how youâre thinking about âwhat youâre supposed to be doing.â
- Are you focusing on how âlateâ you are to start?
- Or how bad you feel that this âshould be easyâ for you?
- Do you keep saying you should do better/more?
- Is it difficult to even think about?
You should be able to comfortably think about the things you need to do.
It took me years to realize that my brain doesnât HAVE to be a dichotomy between feeling so guilty I shut down completely, or jumping from distraction to distraction to make life bearable until IÂ âinevitablyâ crash and burn.
Try to push yourself to focus instead onâŚ
âŚdemystifying obligations.
- What you do or donât do in this situation is just an action, not anything more.
- What people may think of the way you go about things isnât as important as just making sure you arenât hurting yourself right now.
- You will physically feel better if you take a break.
- What did you do first the last time you needed to do this thing?
- How did you feel the last time you did this? Why?
âŚdetaching your sense of self worth from the situation.
- Youâre not bad or gross or lazy for struggling this way.
- (I think a lot of simple âNo, youâre notâsâ at myself like this.)
- You donât deserve to be punished.
- Youâre not screwing up something âeasy,â because itâs not easy for you.
- It doesnât matter whoâs fault it is, what matters is doing what you can for your wellbeing.
