I've always wondered, would it take more thread to sew the same seam by machine or by hand? I do think machine would end up with a hint more wasted thread

I think hand sewing leaves much more wasted thread, especially with long seams! Because you can only use a fairly short length, and have to have a bit of a tail leftover every time.

With machine sewing, if you're just doing regular seams that go right up to the edge of the fabric, you can just put the next piece right in front of the last one and clip in between them with no wasted thread. Or sew onto a small scrap of fabric in between to avoid a lot of annoying thread tails, which is something I do a lot.

This wouldn't really work if you're using one of the old machines that can't backstitch and you need to leave thread tails and tie them off by hand, but they'd still use less for long seams.

Omfg I sent this ask in 2022??? And this is the first time I'm seeing the actual responses to it. This was back when I first started machine sewing in earnest and kept getting worried about how much thread I had to keep cutting off at the ends of every seam or when the machine jammed and wanted to know if I was just being paranoid or not (I mostly use black fabric and was running through a looooot of black thread)

#my beginners shittiness meant I really did not like how little control I had over the thing when compared to handsewing #where you could use up even the very end of the thread on your needle if you could manoeuvre well enough #also the fabric I had was so thin that even when double layered it would get jammed #I've figured it out better now but omfg. that thundering beast had me Incensed for so long and made me feel like I was wasting so much

The Scrap-Yarn-Embroidery-Practice thing continues to grow. This one isn't scrap yarn it's green sewing thread I mixed with some kind of green tinsel-like thread. Absolutely atrocious for crocheting with but looks nice for embroidery. Atrocious to work with though. But we persevere

All four stone in my Forest Floor series are done. Just thinking about mossy stones, dappled light on the forest floor, lichen, bark, leaves.

I had fun dressing up stones again.

Linen, cotton, wool and silk threads. River stones.

Decided to try crocheting some trim with three strand sewing thread and at a loose gauge it went fine. Very soft and cute. The colours (just pieces of half empty tubes of thread I wanted to use up) helped bring out the detail too.

....and then I had the bright idea of going down two hook sizes and using all black. It is ummmm how you say...not fucken worth it. Very much continuing doing this for sunk cost reasons

#if I do this again I'll just use actual crochet thread. or sewing thread as a loose gauge #I think this piece might also not be long enough....#craft sins be upon ye #crochet
