I wish more people knew about the Thursday Next series. They're full of time travel, excursions into fiction, competative and very violent croquet, vampires and werewolves, mindworms, religion, parenting, literature as a driving force of culture, dodos, battenburg cake, Neanderthals, The Socialist Republic of Wales, cheese smuggling, and PTSD. There's something for everyone and will broaden your horizon, whilst making you laugh and think.
Have you read The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde (2001)?
yes
no
I didn't finish it
I've never heard of it
"If it weren't for greed, intolerance, hate, passion and murder, you would have no works of art, no great buildings, no medical science, no Mozart, no Van Gough, no Muppets and no Louis Armstrong." - Jasper Fforde, The Big Over Easy
Madonna in Glory by Carlo Dolci, detail
Rereading Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series is just so funny. The main character is named Thursday Next. Her mother is named Wednesday. Her father is both employed by and on the run from time cops as he tries to stop French revisionists. She has a friend named Spike Stoker who hunts vampires and werewolves. She meets people named Mr. Walken and Mr. Dedmen as well as Mr. Fodder and Mr. Kannon and thinks nothing of it. Her perceived arch nemesis is named Acheron Hades. Her actual arch nemesis is a mega corporation running the military industrial complex. She can jump in and out of books at will and is friends with multiple famous characters. And all of this is just world building.
Truly just chaos
