These towhees are found in the understory of mountainous pine-oak woodlands in parts of central and southern Mexico. Their plumage is similar to that of the Chestnut-capped Brush-Finch, but the two species are easily distinguished by their songs. Though the details of their diet are not well known, they are thought to feed on seeds, fruit, and small invertebrates. They build cup-shaped nests from dry grasses, pine needles, and other materials.
