Iâm so tired. Hereâs a reminder for everyone:
Mirai Nagasu was born in Montebello, California (and raised in Arcadia).
Chloe Kim was born in Long Beach, California (and raised in Torrance).
They are the children of immigrants. They are not immigrants themselves. To call them immigrants is racist. Itâs racist to say that because they are Asian and because their parents are not from the U.S., they must be immigrants themselves. Itâs just flat out racist, okay? Iâm tired of it. Mirai and Chloe were born in the United States. Theyâre not immigrants. Period. Full stop. The end.
Yesterday, some writer on Twitter got into hot water because she tweeted a video of Mirai and said âImmigrants: They Get the Job Done.â They. She called Mirai an immigrant, even though she was born in the US. And then she tried to back-track and failed miserably, but sheâs still trying to say she was right.Â
Today, I heard NBC cut up a quote from Chloe. NBCâs primetime coverage had her saying that âwinning a gold in my home country is amazingâ even though what she REALLY said was that âwinning a gold in their [their being her parentsâ] home country is amazing.â She was not calling South Korea her home country, and from the sound of that original quote it doesnât even appear that she thinks of South Korea as her home country. To cut up that quote and make it sound like South Korea is her home country is racist. SHE WAS LITERALLY BORN IN LONG BEACH.
Iâm so fucking tired of this. Asian Americans are winning medals and gaining national recognition for their efforts and you still canât see us as anything other than immigrants.
