Since folks on here are rediscovering the concept art of Mio with Pneuma's Core Crystal, I thought I'd repost an old art I made to illustrate my own theory on what it might mean about Rex's family on Tumblr.
I also made an illustration of how they, ahem, got to that point which you can find the full version of here.

And that's Chapter 3! In which Shulk puts on his new outfit for Rex. The chapter is accompanied by this fanart. This was basically the original idea I had for the fic, back when it was a simple drabble to provide context for the art so it didn't feel as if I was tossing images into the void.
One more chapter before we get to the naughty stuff, because I got bitten by plotbunnies yet again and ended up writing so much for the second half of this chapter that it ended up becoming its own thing too.

There's only so much you can do about mistaken identity in the heat of the moment. So after enough years of Rex confusing him for Mythra, Shulk just learns to stop giving a damn, roll with it, and even embrace it.
Eventually he commissions an outfit from one of the Liberators who knew Mythra, and wears it it on purpose to look extra good for Rex.

No doubt, given all the time these two spent together on Aionios, you just know Rex called out the wrong name at least once.
Good thing Aionios time works the way it does, because early on, doing that just got him banished to the couch dimension for an entire year.

the cringe police don’t want you to know that the bird dating sim hatoful boyfriend is actually a fantastically written bait and switch slow burn horror comedy that is not only genuinely entertaining, not only a genre defining piece of parody work, but also back in 2011, accurately depicted a post-pandemic rise in ethnonationalism. it’s the best game in the world and reading this back maybe the cringe police should come for me actually but it’s fine just carry on my legacy and play hatoful boyfriend
I am seconding the Play Hatoful Boyfriend agenda! (and sort of hijacking this post to promote hatoful even further, I'm sorry OP)
It's genuinely one of the wildest rides I've experienced in any game. The world building is incredible, the writing is interesting and engaging. The "dating" routes are occasionally self aware or purposefully cheesy. The real story of the game is revealed to you in a special route only unlocked by completing all of the bachelor routes and its well worth the effort. It has romance, mystery, horror, fantasy, action, literally everything. It's such a complete bundle of everything I could want in a game, especially a visual novel.
On that note, if you're interested in giving Hatoful Boyfriend (And its sequel!) a try, I recommend you wait for a Steam sale if possible.
The creator, HatoMoa, has stated on her Twitter that due to specifics she didn't go into about an Epic Games merger, she no longer receives royalties from the game itself. So any money being spent on the game isn't going to her anymore, it just goes to Epic Games (who just laid off a ton of their staff btw, so they aren't exactly deserving of HatoMoa's hard earned profits imo).
This doesn't mean you shouldn't purchase and play the game, though!! She still wants the game to be enjoyed and the HD version on Steam is the most recently updated and should work on most PCs as well as the version she recommended for the best gameplay experience. The old version doesn't work as well on newer PCs due to the now outdated program it was made in.
If you would like to financially support HatoMoa, there is an official Hatoful Shop with official Hatoful Boyfriend merch that she receives income from! She has also stated recently on her Twitter that this may not always be a source of income for her and that simply being nice and kind to wild birds in your local area is enough for her (source, also screenshot of post below).
If simply loving and appreciating birds isn't enough for you, she has recently been working as a writer and character designer on a lot of upcoming games such as Sushi Ben and Boyfriend Dungeon. She has also written for drama CDs like 「帝都のフロントクラーク 松屋町千代鶴の記憶」. And on top of all that, she is also a Mangaka! Her most recently published work is 「はととダム in 屋久島」 (Hato and Damu in Yakushima).
