They did not have to kill allura and I stand by that. I will die on that hill. I’m so tired of showrunners killing off strong female characters as a plot device, it’s so infuriating. They did it with Allura, and Jane Hopper (eleven), and Queen Angella. Allura was the entire reason for the show. She is the reason Voltron was formed again, she’s the one who made alliances, she’s the one that helped the paladins bond, she’s the one who kept the team together. She gave everything, she lost her planet, she lost the man she loved, she fought her entire life. She gave everything, and the showrunners decided that they had to kill her.
Allura was such a strong female character. She was feminine but she was still tough, she was confident in herself, she was smart and funny and kind, and she held everyone together.
I’m convinced to this day that they only killed allura off because she was a strong, black woman. The showrunners had no problem killing off every gay character or queerbaiting, so they obviously didn’t care about queer characters, I don’t think that’s a stretch to say that they killed her for that reason.
This is an ongoing theme, where showrunners kill off a strong female character in order to motivate the male characters, and that’s what it felt like. Voltron was already very male focused, which is fine, but it doesn’t feel right that the strong female character was killed off in a show that already revolves around the men.
They killed her off for the same reason people say they hate her and she’s the worst character, for the same reasons they say that the male characters are better. It’s because allura is a strong, powerful, black woman. It’s because of misogyny, racism, and because they wanted to do everything they possibly could to center the men in the story.
I’ll never forget what they did to my queen. She deserved so much better.
