Chapter Two
They never said it out loud.
It existed in the quiet spaces between words , in glances that lingered a moment too long, in the way he always seemed to know when she was struggling before she said a thing and the way she could tell something was weighing on him long before he let it show.
Jaskirat knew it and Vikram also figured it out eventually , because he was not as oblivious as he performed.
" So " Vikram started the conversation one morning while they were running , falling into step beside her.
" you and sir—...! "
" Complete that sentence and I will make sure you won't be able to speak for the rest of your life " Priya said pleasantly. Vikram grinned and said nothing else , but he surely grinned about it for the rest of the day.
The training grew more intense with each passing day. They were being shaped into something very specific — people who could slip into another country, another identity and gather the information India needed.
Pakistan.
It existed as an unspoken truth among them. The instructors never felt the need to spell it out but the signs were everywhere — in the language classes , the cultural immersion , the intelligence exercises. Piece by piece , they were being prepared for a life across the border.
Priya was good at languages. Her Urdu had been strong from the starting but she refined it until there was no trace of anything that didn't belong. She learned accents , mannerisms , references and patterns of speech. How to become someone else so completely that it sometimes unsettled her.
After long training sessions , she would stand in front of a mirror and look at her reflection.
Priya Sharma
That is your name
You're here for serving your country Priya
She repeated those words to herself often. The training demanded new identities but she refused to let it take the old one. There was no room for distractions , for attachments , or for anything that could make her forget who she was or why she had chosen this path.
No matter what identity she wore, she reminded herself of one thing above all else...Never forget who you are
It became a promise she made to herself every day.
But what Priya didn't realize was that , despite all her discipline and reminders , she was already breaking one of her own rules without even knowing it
───────────────────────────────────────
Six months into training , Ajay Sanyal called Sushant into a private meeting.
Priya didn't think much of it at first. Meetings happened all the time. Briefings , evaluations , operational discussions - none of it was unusual.
But when Sushant returned , something felt different.
He was quieter
The change was subtle enough that most people probably wouldn't have noticed it.
But Priya did
During the afternoon session , she caught him looking at her from across the training hall. It lasted only a second before he looked away , but there was something in his expression she couldn't place.
It looked more like someone carrying knowledge they weren't sure how to share and the feeling stayed with her for the rest of the day.
By evening , training had ended and the facility was beginning to empty. Priya was gathering her things when she heard his voice behind her.
" Priya "
She turned
" Sit down for a minute "
Something in his tone made her obey without question
He took the chair across from her and for a few moments, neither of them spoke. Sushant rested his forearms on the table and stared at the surface as though he was organizing his thoughts before saying them out loud.
The silence stretched just long enough to make her uneasy. Then he finally spoke.
" Vikram and Jaskirat are being deployed "
The words landed heavily between them.
Priya felt her breath catch
Of course they were
She had always known this day would come , after all that was the entire purpose of the training.
Nobody stayed here forever
People finished their preparation , received their assignments and left. She had known it logically , yet hearing it spoken aloud made something sink in her chest. Because suddenly it wasn't a distant future anymore.
It was already happening.
Vikram and Jaskirat were leaving.
And for the first time , the reality of what they were being trained for felt frighteningly close.
She looked down at her hands
" Jaskirat will be fine," she said quietly " He was born serious enough for this " a faint smile touched her lips.
" Vikram will charm his way out of anything. I genuinely think he could get captured , make friends with his captors , and leave with their phone numbers. "
That earned the ghost of a smile from Sushant. The humor faded almost as quickly as it had appeared.
" But they're still leaving " her words hung in the air.
She wasn't thinking about deployments anymore.
She was thinking about what came after.
About the fact that six months ago they had all been strangers and now the thought of two empty seats in the training room felt so wrong.
Sushant studied her for a moment.
" That's part of this job. "
" I know "
" You don't get to keep people forever Priya "
Something tightened in her chest
She understood that. She had understood it from the day she walked through the gates of the academy.
Attachments complicated things
Attachments made people hesitate
Attachments got people hurt
And yet , despite knowing all of that , she found herself wondering what the training hall would feel like without Vikram's constant jokes or Jaskirat's dry comments.
" You're not worried about the mission " Sushant said eventually.
Priya shook her head.
" No "
" Then what are you worried about? "
She was quiet for a long time and finally , she looked up.
" That one day it'll be my turn "
His expression didn't change.
" That's the idea "
" I know "
" And when that day comes ? "
She held his gaze , " When that day comes , I'll go. "
There wasn't any hesitation in her voice. No uncertainty either...just acceptance.
A long silence stretched between them , neither seeming eager to break it.
Sushant nodded once as if that answer was exactly what he had expected or perhaps exactly what he had been afraid of.
The fluorescent lights hummed softly overhead. A long silence stretched between them, neither seeming eager to break it. Then Priya pushed her chair back.
" Three weeks is enough time to fix my timing on that combination "
A corner of Sushant's mouth twitched.
" Okay "
She nodded once and stood before uttering " Goodnight sir "
" Goodnight Priya "
She turned towards the door.
The conversation should have ended there.
Vikram and Jaskirat were leaving. The future was coming whether any of them were ready for it or not. There was nothing left to say.
Her hand was already on the door when his voice stopped her.
" Priya " she froze
The sound of her name from him always seemed to do that.
Slowly , she turned back. Neither of them spoke but the distance between them suddenly felt smaller than it should have. He looked at her as though he wanted to say something else.
Something beyond deployments and training schedules and operational readiness.
Something neither of them had any right to say.
The feeling was familiar by now. It had been growing quietly for months , hidden beneath lessons , evaluations and discipline. Neither of them acknowledged it. Neither of them allowed it a name.
But for a second , she could see it.
And somehow , she knew he could see it too.
Then whatever had crossed his face disappeared.
" Sleep well " he said
Just that.
Nothing more.
The door closed again
Priya held his gaze for a heartbeat longer before nodding
" You too , sir. " then she walked out.
The hallway felt colder than before. Behind her, the room remained lit. Ahead of her waited another day of training , another day of becoming someone else.
But for the first time , the thought that she might eventually have to leave felt a little different.
A little heavier.
───────────────────────────────────────
The day Vikram and Jaskirat left , not dramatically because that was not how these things worked , just a morning where they were there and then they weren't. Priya stood in the training room alone for a long time. Looking at the mats , the maps on the walls , the marks on the floor from a thousand sessions.
Jaskirat had hugged her before he left. He didn't hug people casually — it meant something when he did it. He had held on for a moment and said very quietly near her ear , " You take care of yourself. Both of you. "
She had laughed despite herself " There's no both. "
He had pulled back and looked at her with that face he had , the one that said I see everything and I'm not going to argue with you about it.
" Take care of yourself " he had repeated.
Vikram had done something more theatrical involving a bow and a terrible joke that she had laughed at properly , because Vikram's terrible jokes always landed somehow , and then they were gone.
She was standing in the training room when Sushant came in. He stopped when he saw her. Read the room , came and stood beside her — not too close , but still beside her , both of them looking at the empty mats.
" They'll be okay "
" I know "
" Jaskirat especially is— "
" I know " she repeated. Then , softer — " I know..."
He didn't say anything else after that , just stood there beside her. Present.
After a while she finally spoke , " Train me harder now. I have more time. "
He looked at her sideways.
" They're going to need good intel " she said. " Which means eventually I have to go too. So train me until there's nothing left to teach. "
His jaw did that thing where it tightened , " Priya— "
" Please " she said quietly
There was a long pause and then finally , " Fine "
