Keep most of the design the same, but figure out what exactly you dislike. If its something specific, take it away and replace it. If it's just the design in general, start with adding more details. Different accessories. Unique clothing changes, add random lines, designs, and buttons until you find something that sticks. Think of the character's story and who they are, and think of other characters similar to them and what about those designs stick out and hint to their personalities. For example, a confident character may have bold clothes and unconventional designs or hairstyles. A messy or nervous character might have wrinkles in their clothes or mismatched accessories. Snobby characters might look stereotypically rich or fancy, maybe obnoxiously.

Expressions and poses also go a long way! Pushing them can really help bring out a character's more noticeable/main emotions or personalities.

I also have a book that may help if you're interested- honest to God I just bullshit a lot of it. But if I follow any redesign tips, it's mostly this. A lot of experimenting, a lot of trial and error, and a lot of Pinterest and image surfing lol.
