Simon pressed the barbell upwards, let it drop into the rack, and then straightened up with a strained grunt. Sweat clung to his back and trickled down his tattooed arms. It was quiet in the large building, which felt more like home to him than his own apartment.
"Hello König," he said into the deserted training area, turning his head to the side.
Leaning in the shadows next to the door was a broad-shouldered, masked man, about 2.10 meters tall, who looked at him seriously with folded arms.
"You have to stop this," came the voice, punctuated by a distinctly German accent.
Simon saw something moving under the fabric of the mask, something that was certainly not human, and he only paid cursory attention to it.
"I'm not giving up," he replied, rising from the bench. König growled and shook his head.
"465 lifelines, Simon. When will it finally be enough?"
"It's not enough until he stays with me!"
"You can't change his fate. Bending time is dangerous. Isn't it enough that you're distorting the world?"
"Creatures like you can't understand that."
"That may be," König agreed. "But we also have an interest in preventing a single crazy revenant from plunging reality into endless chaos. The next reset could be too much!"
"If my plan works," Simon said, ignoring the other's words, "there won't be a next time." He wiped his face with the towel and then looked back at König. His eyes were filled with pain. "I want him to stay with me forever!" A slight smile appeared on his lips. "So I will continue, even if I drag everyone down with me. If it means destroying the world, then so be it! Either a world with him, or darkness for all of us!"
