Right, I was heading to the house to visit my mother and sister. I haven’t seen them in a while after leaving to start working at the train station with my friend. I should visit them more often.
I stepped out of the cab, bidding goodbye to its driver that sat upon the top of the horse drawn wagon. Dusting off the front of my pant legs I started walking through the garden gate, towards my mother’s house that stood in the very center of the garden.
As I walked I became vaguely aware that I didn’t remember most things that were in the garden, like the stone tall fountain with a cherub spewing out water. This left an unsettling sensation in my stomach, like something falling into an endless pit, as I continued to move forward on the path surrounded by the greenery.
The white house finally came into my view as I opened another gate that separated the empty dry area around the house from the greenery of the garden around it. The hinges squeaked as I closed the gate behind me and made my way to the house, knocking on the door as I stood, leaning on the cane that was in one of my hands.
A shuffling noise came from behind the door as it opened and a young girl in a pale lavender dress came out, looking at me with a very happy expression on her face.
“Brother! You finally came to visit us again!”
Right, this is my sister, I thought as I made a note in my brain that I should stop being so forgetful. It will really backfire on me one day.
“Yes, I apologize for that. I was busy at the train station, we had an emergency,” I said as I walked into the house, taking off my hat and noting the couple of brown hairs from my head that were stuck to it.
I dragged my feet on the carpet as I walked further into the house, my sister dragging me along to-
As I entered the wood floored room I noticed the older woman sitting by the window on a cushioned chair, a white see through shawl clinging to her shoulders, protecting her from the cold.
Wait no, it's summer. Why was she wearing a Shawl then?
“Mother, James is finally here! He couldn’t visit us because there was an emergency at the train station,” said my sister as the grey haired woman- my mother, turned around to face me, her face full of wrinkles seemingly relaxing as she saw me standing with my hat in my hand.
Her face softened even more than I thought was possible as she then said, “An emergency? Do tell me about it, son.”
My mind was blank for a split second before all of the information flooded into my brain.
“One of the railways got seriously damaged when a train crashed off of them, luckily no one was injured and the train didn’t flip over either.”
My sister sat down while smiling at me comfortingly, but oddly enough I didn’t feel any less disconnected than I did before, I could even say I felt even more disconnected.
“Did anything happen to your friend? I heard she worked at the office at the station,” said my mother as she tugged on her shawl, it slightly slipping off her clothed shoulder.
“Oh Jane? She’s doing- alright. The accident shook her a bit, you know how she is with events such as this.”
Surprisingly this time I actually remembered someone right away, but all of the other information on Jane came to my mind a bit late compared to her existence.
An even more uncomfortable feeling settled in my stomach, as I realised how absurd it is that I cannot remember anything right on time.
Something is definitely wrong, and I can’t put my finger off of it.
This is just like all the times I thought what would happen if I was trapped in a -
Simulation. This is a Simulation.
As I came to this realization everything became more apparent. The setting, the family- It was all too old.
I wasn’t a worker at a train station, I was an astronaut on the space station Hades that searched for alien life in space, and it seemed that the alien life found us first.
As I opened my eyes, the real world came into view.
The capture of the so-called human had been a success, they gave us all of the information we needed on those golden disks they sent in hopes to find life other than themselves.
Though the human was tense before we captured, nothing else was out of the ordinary and we were able to acquire it as a new subject. As always, we the .-. ..- .-.. . .-. ... / --- ..-. / - .... . / .-- .- - . .-. ... / .- -. -.. / - .... . / ...- --- .. -.. / -... . -.-- --- -. -.. prevail.
Though humans were a really odd species of the prey group, they were remarkably smart for creatures as simple minded as they were compared to us. They were truly dull though, they were an odd amalgamation of a large number of characteristics of different beings, completely different and the definition of average.
So the higher ups decided to put it into the simulation chamber to test how they act, if they are innately violent or peaceful. Though the answer seemed quite obvious to me, considering the message of peace that they were sending on the messages they sent into what they considered an endless void.
The human was then put into the simulation, while having its memory blocked and having it supplanted with false ones of what we gathered on the humans. It would have been much easier if most of the discs that they sent with completely free information hoping for peace weren’t destroyed by time and the debris in space.
I still can’t understand why they didn’t just create sonic wave technology to protect the things they send to space like we did. Just like I said previously, as smart as they are enough to make technology that goes beyond what was safe for them, they are remarkably plain and average.
Though what was interesting about the human, outside of its very odd biology, is that it always seemed on edge while in the situation. Some of my coworkers seem to believe that its species might have some kind of fourth sense instead of having three like us, but I think that they are finding meaning where there isn’t any.
I rolled my eyes as I stared at the pure white chamber that the human was contained in, the apparatus of its illusions attached to its head with a bunch of unnecessary tubes attached to it, quote on quote to measure its life signal, whatever that may be.
As I said, its species has very interesting biology, but all of the unnecessary pieces it has in its body is absurd. Like what on.-.. .- -. -.. / --- ..-. / - .... . / .-- .- - . .-. would you need that many hard structures in your odd ligaments?
I sighed as I slid out of the observation chamber, heading towards the communal rest room to get myself a bowl of what the human species called ‘coffee’. The scavengers that looked through its ship found it in one of the sustenance containers that they kept on board. I went to the fridge, getting the bag of the hard brown pebbles, pouring them into my bowl.
I ate the coffee, enjoying its crunch, as I walked out of the communal room, heading to my own private quarters. Just as I was about to turn around the corner to walk down to the location where all of the quarters were located, the lights went out.
That was rather odd considering the electricians on our ship were rather competent. Maybe it was the idiot intern that they hired just two weeks ago, that would explain a lot.
I sat down on the little bench that came out of the wall, waiting for the electricity to turn back on, passing the time by trying to make anything out in the pitch blackness in which I cannot see at all.
Suddenly the announcement speaker made a beeping noise as the announcer started speaking, but the panic in his voice was apparent as they shouted.
“Warning! Please find a safe place to hide, the human has escaped containment and is currently out in the facility!”
Reluctantly I entered one of the side rooms with nothing in it but benches attached to the walls, because the human couldn’t have been that dangerous.
But as I sat for a bit I suddenly heard the noise of running down the hallway and panting. Feeling disturbed I backed away into the top right corner, when suddenly I heard a noise and one of the hallway lights turned on, making my room even darker compared to the already dark hall.
A tall lanky figure came into view, completely dark from the contrast of the light.
And as I made eye contact with its shiny eyes I understood.
Those were the eyes of a predator.
Notes: Idk, I made this in english for our final 'project'. No comment, it's def not my best work.
