Buckyβs Winter Soldier Reset Code Suddenly Makes Tons of Sense (and takes awhile to explain)
THE RESET CODE ISNβT JUST A BUNCH OF RANDOM RUSSIAN.Β
βHad to put that out there immediately. Because the brain doesnβt work like that, unless you have a mental condition or a very unique way of thinking. It canβt be completely random, because forcing a human mind to violently do what Buckyβs mind is forced to do in the movie with just a randomized selection of bullshit is insanely hard and not very effective. SO, I THINK I FIGURED IT OUT FOR THOSE WHO WONDERED AND ASKED ME FOR AN ANSWER. Note that this is a lot of educated guesswork and callback to my recently completed college psychology classes. Itβs totally overboard to do this, because I doubt the Russo brothers actually put this much thought into the words, but I find it insanely (and disturbingly) fascinating, and a few anons messaged me for a real world explanation that isnβt too βscience heavy.β I am here to deliver, and sob heavily while doing it.

As I have explainedΒ before, Bucky Barnes has become the Winter Soldier through a series of violent abuses that have taken his memories for the most part. But, his ability to still function as a human being stems from the power of habits, specifically the awesome capability of theΒ basal ganglia (the oldest part of the human brain), keeping alive what little vestiges of himself that exist within the parameters of his many handlers in his 70+ period of being an assassin. Since habits are imprinted in the brainβs basal ganglia via repetition and association, we can better understand how this βprogrammingβ probably went about.
For starters, the bad guys obviously started with a rebellious James Buchanan Barnes, who may have been mildly drunk on pain meds, with a metal arm.Β
How do you instigate loyalty, break down a man forcibly and reforge him into a willing tool, successfully? The answer is unhealthy habits; backwards motivation, mental and physical tiredness, and a crap ton of abuse. Since the MCU canon said that the Russian HYDRA sect (which was a mix of HYDRA ideals and lots of Soviet Russia Red Room stuff) had Bucky first and foremost, I am going to say that he was probably initially tortured with their known tactics. Itβs also something anyone might have seen if theyβve seen the filmΒ Bridge of Spies.
The technique in that film is one reported to have been used by the Russians through the 40β²s and onwards, which is a somewhat daunting thought. First, they harass the victim verbally. They have floodlights focused on them, which is a good way of triggering and tiring the brain; itβs why it sucks to have light in your eyes if you have a headache. If they donβt get anything, they take the victim away, dump them in their equally well-lit cell/detainment, and kill the lights. Barely an hour passes (and note that a standard human sleep cycle is an hour and a half) and they repeat the process. This continues until the victim is both mentally and physically exhausted, from the verbal abuse, bright lights, and the inability to sleep a full cycle.
With that kind of numbing experience and repetition, the already developing temporary habit in the victim, and the pre-existing bodily exhaustion from the train fall/surgery, the real abuse could technically begin.
Zola was more than likely involved. Itβs explained partially inΒ Winter SoldierΒ and supplementary side stories published by Marvel that he went back after being freed by HYDRA sleeper agents in SHIELD to do whatever he pleased with Bucky and the robot arm. I assume with this line of information that he had procured Buckyβs history/military medical file in his time βworking withβ SHIELD. The Winter Soldier code words could begin to be beaten into him with these files of information in hand, words selected carefully so that his intact mind would latch onto them via association and unhealthy motivations (physical abuse). The violent training could also begin, building the framework of what the Winter Soldier was to be: a human weapon without feeling and nearly all perfectly-trained killer instinct. That training was probably a process done at the same time as the words are being programmed into Bucky, accompanied by electric shock toΒ βenforceβ to immediate default reaction, so it could be recalled or unburied if Bucky was ever to regain his memories. We see this in Civil War, when Zemo recites the words and Bucky visibly flinches or jerks as if heβs in The Chair; the remembrance of the horrible pain via the spoken code words is forcing the ex-assassin (unhealthy motivation) to default on what he was trained to be (a persona constructed from a series of unhealthy habits that cannot be forgotten).
So keep in mind: The words were selected so one Bucky Barnes would remember them following abuse-induced habitual association. HYDRA wanted the result to be a string of words that could turn a human being into a killing machine with no memory or emotional drive. Each word is a keystone habit, an action that induces reaction from all parts of the brain, and they are all ultimately grounded in what little vestiges of Bucky Barnes that survives through habits/in the basal ganglia.Β
Thus, we start to list off the words in order.
Longing - It makes sense that this is the first word. If you were a torture victim, suddenly missing a flesh arm and now βgiftedβ with a robot arm, mentally and physically exhausted, most likely forced to fight like a caged animal, you definitely have longing. Longing to escape, longing to sleep, longing for a release from the torture, a longing for familiarity. Buckyβs torturers probably emphasized the βlongingβ to associate with βrelease,β as the entire Winter Soldier Code was to take any memories Bucky has away and set him back to default/awaken the Winter Soldier persona; that the unhealthy motivations they were inflicting on him would stop if he simply βreleasedβ himself from rebellion and resistance, or his memories (and many individuals mentally associate memories with their sense of self, so thereβs another thing to keep in mind). This mix probably created the first word. Itβs the easiest to make (which is horrible to think about) and itβs scarily effective on a weary mind.
Rusted - There are a lot of ways to interpret the word. It obviously is a state of being for metal. But, what do we normally associate rust with? Fragility, old, decay, bad. Bucky has a metal arm, and I canβt exactly say that his frame of mind or his train of thought was ever that happy. If you take the words associated with rust and go further, it links up with his mental and emotional state. Heβs tired, heβs abused, heβs being forced to fight. Itβs akin to the type of associations linked to longing, but stronger. You canβt deny that Bucky may have had some morbid thoughts about his robot arm, made some disturbing comparisons, and sunk deeper into the Russian-HYDRA programming because of his destabilizing mental state. And, the less resistance he has, the more HYDRA can manipulate him. This word comes second for a good reason: it connects well with longing, yet still holds greater meaning (however dark and downright terrifying that is to think about).
Seventeen - I did some crazy digging around, lots of MCU research, to figure this one out. Problem is, I still have more than one theory for it. So, Iβll just flesh them out.Β
My first theory is that this is the date he fell from the train. They never tell you explicitly what day Bucky fell from the train, but in the 1940β²s MCU timeline, thereβs this suspicious grey area before February where they inject Buckyβs fall and HYDRA discovering the Obelisk (If you have no idea what I mean by the Obelisk, watch episode eight of the second season of Agents of SHIELD). So, I assume that those events happened sometime in January, and from there, I can only assume tentatively that the seventeenth of January was when he fell. Why is this still a theory, even if it seems far-fetched? Because it would be easy to connect with the previous two words. If you stack on the longing to be released from torture, the rusted state Bucky seems to be trapped in, and that the seventeenth of January is the date this entire cycle of hell started, itβs a perfect falling action into misery. What better way to eliminate feeling and emotional reaction than to drown the brain in negative associations with feelings? The three words together are literally three shots towards the deep abyss of nothing that HYDRA wants Bucky to be in. If you force a man to drown in that much negativity, his brain will try to latch onto any possible way to cope; even if that means submitting to the HYDRA training.
The second theory is that there might have been something on Buckyβs health record or personal history involving to Buckyβs teenage life when he was seventeen. Itβs an influential point in a personβs life, since a young person suddenly has raging hormones and puberty hits them like a sledgehammer. What could have happened when Bucky was seventeen? Did Steve get hospitalized, nearly die? Did Bucky get a bad injury that was painful, but he thankfully healed from? Did a parent die? In comic canon, Buckyβs parents die when heβs young. We never actually address the existence of Buckyβs parents in the MCU, only Steveβs mother Sarah and a vague reference to Steveβs dad, Joseph Rogers. The negative association that I assume is attached to that number would still fuel the emotional breakdown that HYDRA is working to encourage. Because, with the more emotional death, the more they can manipulate him. Itβs that horribly simple.
My third theory is that itβs a number his torturers-trainers picked and decided to associate with their routines. Seventeen punches. Seventeen times he didnβt get to rest. Seventeen times he failed to kill his opponent. Seventeen loyal HYDRA people standing in an observation box, watching his training progress. There has to be something negative associated with the number or some kind of associative trigger to make this word a viable trigger for further βresetβ in Bucky for 70+ years.Β
Daybreak - Depending on the person, this word can be associated with nearly anything. Daybreak generally means the first light of the morning; dawn. But, it could mean all sorts of things. The beginning of something new, the beginning of something bad, the first step over the line. It could have been used against Bucky as a taunt to his state of imprisonment, but his torturers already have three words emphasizing on his negative emotions programmed into him at this point. This reset code is supposed to put him in his Winter Soldier state; the first three words were to break any existing emotion down. So, I deduce that this is the trigger for the Winter Soldier training/persona to begin to take over. Itβs a morbid milestone word that commemorates the Winter Soldier, that this word is drilled into Bucky when they truly begin the break-neck training to make him the ultimate killing machine. The core killer programming is connected to this keystone habit. This word is the beginning of the end, really. Itβs still linked to negative emotion, but itβs really the kick starter for the persona to take hold.
Furnace - This one was actually the toughest one to figure out. I had to think hard on it, and be creative with what other words are associated closely with furnace. I mean, HYDRA is creating the WinterΒ Soldier! What reason do they have to pick a word like furnace? Are they making a sick joke off Buckyβs given codename? But then I realized: Zola and the HYDRA scientists working alongside him experimented on Bucky. Yes, while previously in HYDRA captivity, Bucky had been experimented on; thatβs why we see him on a steel table looking dazed. Though itβs never referenced in the movie, extra information given out after the filmβs release stated that Bucky actually did suffer some side-effects: partially-accelerated healing (better than an average human being but not as instantaneous as Steveβs serum-enhanced healing) and improved physical capability (which also included sight and hearing that was above-average). Whether or not this was ever kept on record by SSR or omitted out of fear of HYDRA spies is unclear; itβs never acknowledged or referenced by Steve, and nothing is said in the Smithsonian exhibit. Either way, Zola obviously has the opportunity to continue his experiments on Bucky and did (hello, extremely bulked up Bucky Barnes that is trying to kill everybody in Winter Soldier). Watching Steveβs transformation, which is admittedly through different means and with a different formula, I can only assume that the effects of the Serum on the body must be insanely painful. Itβs a chemical cocktail that is forcing the subjectβs body to produce cells at an inhuman rate, altering the skeletal structure, editing DNA, and basically rebuilding the entire human body from a supplied living template. Pain can feel like fire. And what better way to further program the developing Winter Soldier than to pick a word associated with a painful transformation forced upon him against his will, as if heβs owned? The amount of psychological fuckery in this word is justβ¦ damn. So, thatβs the next word: one that emphasizes the Winter Soldier persona, implies a slave-like ownership, and still connects to all the words through pain.
Nine - This is much like the word seventeen, in that there are more than a few theories as to why this word was selected.
One of them involves date association, just like the last number word. I specifically focus on the month of December in the year 1941. On the 7th, Steve and Bucky were in an art class when they heard about the entire event on live radio, and Americaβs declaration of joining the War. Itβs also said that following the broadcast, Bucky decided he was going to take Steve to Goldieβs Boxing Gym (yeah, the MCU people gave some serious specifics on this) at some point to βtrainβ him for two weeks (which sounds like Bucky trying really hard to be a good encouraging friend to Steve, even though he knows very well that the blonde little shit wonβt pass the screening). I think that Nine could mean that Bucky actually went to join the army early on the 9th of December and was going to be shipped out to Basic within two weeks. But, that seems unlikely, as apparently Bucky was with Steve when the blonde goofball made his first attempt at joining the army.Β
So, my next best guess on date association involved Stark. In the MCU timeline, Stark Industries begins producing specialty fighter/carrier planes shortly after Pearl Harbor, on the 9th. Let it be known that Bucky Barnes is the biggest goddamn science nerd, he took girls out to a science expo, and itβs referenced numerous times in the comics. I think Bucky would have known what date Stark Industries started doing production, read the published journals/magazines covering the news, and totally remembered it because EPIC PLANES. Plus, Bucky probably got to know Stark in some way during the War because of Steve, and maybe talked to the genius about his planes while trying to not become a squishy nerd. But why would HYDRA care, you may ask? Because Stark is the tech rival to HYDRA. Heβs the thorn in their side, heβs probably causing problems for them with the creation of SHIELD with Peggy, and heβs creating better weapons than them. If the torturers kill all emotional connection to something he loves, an idol that encompasses that love, theyβre just taking away more of what Bucky Barnes is. Theyβre conditioning him to see Stark as an enemy, as a possible target, as something not worth any emotional reaction or hesitation. And, the pain connection continues.
But, it could just be an a word association the torturers developed themselves. Nine knives. Nine dead bodies. Nine commanders. Nine different handlers during his time in captivity. Bucky is already so far along in HYDRAβs programming, this word is just another horrible layer to the completion of the Winter Soldier.
Benign - This is theΒ βcool offβ trigger word. The first three words created a falling action, telling Buckyβs mind that emotional reaction and feeling must be erased/denied entirely. Daybreak was the trigger for the Winter Soldier persona to take place, to begin. The following two words were the layers where the core of the Soldier was forged. That creates an emotionless killing machine thatβs only dwelling on pain. This word is like telling all that programming to heel. This is HYDRA wanting the ability to give orders, to have a silent tool, to have a killing machine stand at rest and ready to comply. Itβs forcing all that violence to be still, and this stage of torture-programming must have been by far the most life-endangering out of all the life-endangering torture heβd experienced.
Homecoming - This word was picked to ensure that Bucky, in his Winter Soldier mode, would always come back to HYDRA. Theyβd invested an insane amount of time torturing and rebuilding everything about Bucky into what they exactly wanted, and losing that investment would be costly to them and risk having the enemy gain 70+ years of HYDRA intel if they succeeded in reviving his memories. Or, the man regaining his memories and killing them all. So, the word homecoming was selected to further imply that disturbing slave-like ownership over him, to essentially make him their attack dog. Come back, get the routine chair electrocution to force recent memories to be forgotten, and then be ready to comply.
One - This could have meant anything. The number one is something that can be associated with millions of things, and I canβt say that I am completely sure what. To follow the pattern Iβve been seeing in the word selection, I assume that one could imply the handler assigned to Bucky/Winter Soldier. That there is one being who has his leash. That there is one being he will listen to above all. That he has been programmed to serve ultimately one person who is a head upon the monster that is HYDRA. I could also guess that one could imply forced loyalty, a trigger that forces Bucky to be inclined to be obedient/loyal to HYDRA. One can imply so many different things, and thatβs probably why this is a good word to be picked. Because it associates with everything and nothing. Because the Winter Soldier is everything and nothing.
Freight Car - I donβt even have to explain this. We all know what this implies. The amount of mind fuckery theyβve done to Bucky, this is like the final nail in his mental coffin. One last drive over the edge.
So, there you have it. Associations, abuse motivations, psychological fuckery, and the Winter Soldier persona is literally a series of keystone habits that kills people. This is my guesswork for these words and their significance, and I have no idea if Iβm right or not. Iβd be horrified to bring this up to the Russo bros, because theyβd probably think Iβm crazy or something. Nope, Iβm just a nerd that decided to take psychology and the published work of Charles Duhigg and apply it to understanding how the Winter Soldier can even function. I donβt want to think any further on this specific part of Buckyβs suffering for three weeks, because I had to pause a few times while writing this out, thinking about how horrible this entire process must be. And itβs fiction! But I sympathize so much.
If anyone has any further questions, message me. Or, look up information about PTSD torture victims and try not to cry. Donβt any of you dare ask what kind of brutal torture methods could have been used to condition Bucky, because thatβs shit of nightmares and the deep dark web can probably answer your questions. That, or read those published books that exist on the torture abuse done to supposedΒ βterroristsβ by the American military and how wrong it all is.
