Warde, 2014. Installed by HQ Architects, these nine by nine meter flowers "bloom" when someone approaches, or when a tram is about to arrive, brightening an otherwise depressed part of the city. "Love Letters Building", 2001 German conceptual artist Ha Schult has often worked in the realm of other people's trash, creating large-scale works that force art into everyday life and call attention to the massive consumption of western society. For this project, he used purposeful documentation instead of unwanted trash to cover the facade of a former Berlin post office. He sent out a call for love letters - a gesture highlighting modern German romanticism, and a not-so-subtle reminder of the age before a quick email exchange. New York-based, pun-loving street artist Hanksy helmed an art show in Los Angeles this past Saturday night. 75 artists from LA, NY, Chicago, and Austin came out to West Adams to participate in Surplus Candy LA, putting their mark on this over century-old mansion. As a child, Nepalese artist Tsherin Sherpa underwent six years of intensive training as a traditional Tibetan thangka painter with his father Master Urgen Dorje. For his series of experimental photography titled Impermanent Sculptures, photographer Vitor Schietti worked with fireworks and long-exposure photography to illuminate the branches and stems of trees in his native Brazil. Brazilian tattoo artist Flavia Carvalho helps women survivors of domestic violence by helping cover their physical scars with tattoos, free of charge. In this image, the tattoo covers the scars left on this woman where she was stabbed with broken glass. Flavia explains, "They become excited and optimistic. It's wonderful to see their relationship with their bodies change after they get the tattoos. I follow them on FB, and I see how, after being ashamed by their scarred bodies, they now post pictures in dresses, and they look happy, changed.
