that was the exact point where i realized that the previous dubious points about the witch society were entirely intentional. yes, it is fucked up, and the author won't let us forget it. this is a society that limits learning, bans knowledge, controls information, gives individuals the power to enact horrible justice without oversight. despite the gentle overall vibes, this is a society where citizens have no vote or justice and where, even if not guilty, they can be effectively erased with no avenues of retribution against the police force or the government. the police force exists solely to support the regime, in fact. they even say so; the knights moralis are here to 'secure and execute the rules of the Day of the Pact'.

the "milkman" is a common figure in stories depicting a woman's infidelity and adulterous affair.

this implies that the ability to provide milk would both decrease the likelihood of a man abandoning his wife and children, as it would eliminate the need for leaving to get milk AND would secure that man's marriage, as his wife would have no need to seek milk from an extraneous source.
