in the second video he explains that when he was 18 after his freshman year he declared a philosophy-linguistics major and wanted to be a philosopher and a poet but his parents wanted him to rethink things in terms of career and he did and ultimately chose to become a neurosurgeon but it wasnt what was in his heart and while he was in medicine and starting to feel frustrated with it and his inability to help people heal in the way he wanted to due to the systems and institutions he had to work within, he would agonize over these tiny decisions like whether to get all-season tires or snow tires and just agonize and agonize for weeks driving his wife crazy he didn't know what he wanted and he couldn't make decisions and it was because he couldn't trust himself anymore. because he betrayed himself

everyone talks about how if you show crows that you can be trusted they might start bringing you random & sometimes inscrutable items as gifts, but nobody is pointing out that the same thing is true of surly teenagers who don't talk very much

I was always high-fiving my kids when I was a camp counselor except this one teenager who wasn't having it. that's fine, I respected it. the last day of camp he turned to me and said, "it's time." and let me tell you, that is the most satisfying high five I've ever experienced

shout out to the <10 year old boy yesterday who, when asked what he was dressed up as, said "a dead child." i then asked why a dead child had a chainsaw, and he replied "dude this is literally the chainsaw my parents killed me with" and motioned to his parents standing 3 ft behind him

sometimes my students like to freestyle towards the end of class during their free time. it's usually unremarkable, or related to something that just happened: [you know i be gettin the answers / cuz i'm payin attention in school] after getting a question right, for example. but, last year, one of my teenage boys dropped a bar so iconic I have not stopped thinking about it since: "keep it strapped like a dyke". his slur to reclaim? absolutely not. but you can't deny its magnetism.
