Thank heaven for fan fiction

Beside him, Robbie nudges the desk chair towards him and himself sinks into the armchair. James sits down, but continues to look around curiously, his gaze finally settling on the sliding doors. Robbie chuckles slightly, drawing his attention.

“Those lead to my study, such as it is. Though it might get more use in future.”

James has never been able to resist Robbie’s chuckle, so why should today be any different? He can’t stop his grin breaking out at this, lump in throat be damned!

“Planning to become a toffee-nosed academic in your old age, are you, sir?”

“Oi! What did I say about the sirring?”

Oh! He’s missed this. Missed it like one misses a limb. And every fibre in him wants to reach out and grasp, to keep hold of this for as long as he can. He’s not sure what his face shows, but can’t be much bothered just now. He might, no he's pretty sure he will, muck this up at some point. But that point is not now, so he can as well enjoy this while it lasts. 

Standing up, Robbie opens one of the desk drawers to abstract something James cannot see clearly. He then turns to lean against the desk, stretching out his other hand to cup James’ right. A moment later, a key ring lands in James’ cupped palm, and Robbie is gently closing his fingers around it.

“What?”

“House keys, both front and side doors. The alarm code is Andy’s birthday. And keys for the wardrobe and desk here. Yours.”

“Mine?”

“Hmmm. Your room. Your space, forever. No matter what you decide to do in future, no matter how far you fly, know that you can always return here. This room will be waiting with open arms to welcome you home. As will we.”
