I had this sort of epiphany moment. I just felt like putting production [and concepts] to one side and stripping it back down to just the barebones of the music. Everything about it was about undermining expectations. Coming out of our second album and playing arenas, we set about to make a third album that was all about escapism. But I had been thinking about that gig-that charity gig-we did and how amazing it had been. I came up with this idea of trying to do it again and I just got in my head. It felt kind of like a great idea not fully realized. I wanted to do something that felt different and felt real. But pretty much everyone across the board was like ‘Why would you do that? You have a third album to be making, that’s kind of more important…’
