âWhy does it matter to you?â She asked him raising a brow. Her team had become her family and she would do anything for them. âYou donât know what I want and donât want anymore. You betrayed us.â
âYouâre probably right about that -- but youâre wrong about me. I did what I had to do to survive, but I never meant to hurt you. Say what you will about me: call me liar, murderer, double-agent. Never doubt that though. That one thing was true.â Something had fractured between them, and whatever bright light she had once upon a time shined his way had dimmed. It caused a frown to etch across his face.Â
of-sais :
Everyone is willing to bend the lines to get what they want, especially if they are in a position to do so. I have no qualms with this; SHIELD does not affect my daily life as far as I can tell. Control of what, though? Of us?Â
Of the game. If it doesnât affect you, letâs just hope it stays that way -- although, if theyâve recuperated at all, theyâll have people playing the political field too.Â

âOnly you would consider that an upgrade.â
No, I just think insane is a word people are too quick to give out these days. Theyâre afraid, and itâs the only way to label that fear. If that thingâs me... Well, yeah, I suppose it is an upgrade.Â
modern tragedy | tony & grant
It wasnât Grantâs wisest move, that was for damn sure, but sometimes wisdom was another word for playing it safe -- and what good did playing it safe do him? Technically, he had kept his promise and stayed far from the tower. ( After all, who wanted to approach that hot mess these days? ) While that technicality might keep him from getting arrested, he very much doubted the billionaire would be happy to see him. For that one, Tony Stark could hardly be blamed.Â
Grant sat in the coffee shop, grateful for the training that had been carved into his bones; he didnât twitch every time someone new entered, but instead, he simply waited. It would be obvious when Stark arrived, and -- ding, the bell above the door sounded. Glancing down at his watch, it was right on time. He pushed himself to his feet and waved the man over, slight smirk curving his lips upward. (Â dangerous indeed )
âGlad you got my message,â he greeted. It hadnât been easy getting it to the man, and it had required a bit of...creativity on his part. If that creativity involved a few subtle threats here or there, who could be blamed for it? âHere, I was beginning to think you were starting to miss me.âÂ

a ruin | grant, kaz, & lucille |Â fubar friday
lucillebrass:
kazfelder:
Everything was chaos. There were dead people walking around, tearing open old scars, and no one knew how to react. The X-Men were doing everything they could just to keep the city from falling apart, and that meant calling in reserve members. It meant calling in Kaz.Â
And when they gave him something to do, they didnât make it something easy.
It wasnât like he minded; Kaz loved the X-Men, would have done anything for any one of them, and he appreciated knowing that Charles trusted him enough to give him big tasks. But, fuck, if it wasnât stressful.
Find Lazarus, they said, at any cost. The possibility that the villain was masquerading as one of the not-so-deceased was high, and that made Kaz â Polygraph â the man for the job. Heâd already spoken to one or two of the dead, and so far, heâd had no luck. There was a general consensus of confusion and fear and despair, but no malice. Nothing that a villain might be feeling while relishing in the chaos theyâd created.
He was hit with a strong sense of panic, then, and his eyes caught a woman moving through the crowd. He recognized her. Lucille Brass. CEO of AIM, inhabitor of Kazâs body for a day once, and, if Sam Ashworth was to be trusted, the mastermind behind the flu that had nearly killed him. He felt a scowl tugging at his face, and he wasnât sure if it was his own emotions towards Brass or a mixture of everyone around him stuck in the panic of living again. He didnât figure it mattered.
If he wanted to find one villain, he figured he might as well start with another.
He made his way towards her, pushing down the battling emotions as best he could. Heâd just caught her when someone else appeared, blocking their path.
On the outside, the man seemed almost friendly. Sincere. There was no reason to take his offer of assistance as anything but.Â
Underneath, though, there was a swirl of bad intentions, informing Kaz that while the man might not want to harm him, he wouldnât hesitate. Kaz felt himself tense immediately. âNo,â he said, squaring his shoulders and doing his best to make himself look more intimidating, âWeâre fine.â
It was times like this that Kaz wished he was like Logan, or Rogue, or even Kitty. Their powers were physical, made for helping them out in situations like this. Kazâs was the opposite. They told him when he was in danger, but offered no help in warding it off. Luckily, Kaz had learned that part for himself. Years of fistfights and bruised knuckles did him a rare favor there.
Lucille needed to buy an island.
They werenât that expensive, considering her salary. She could comfortably afford one, leave, and have a money manager in the States who worked her portfolio for her. She could leave, and forget that she ever tried to dip her feet in this, ever tried to be Someone.
Her bodyguards werenât shit against ghosts.
At first, the ghosts hadnât much bothered Lucille. They had freaked her out, certainly, definitely unnerved her, but sheâd dismissed them. They didnât seem to have any powers, after all, just empty incorporeal reflections of who they used to be, so what harm could they do?
A lot of harm, it turned out.
The ghosts had started appearing in such frequency that theyâd crowded out her office, and when sheâd left it, they followed her. Her security team was still trying to figure out a new place for her to be, but in the meantime, Lucille was outdoors, so that the ghosts concentration around her didnât completely block their line of sight to her.
It had worked to a degree. The ghosts had spread out now, but it left her open to physical people. The two men approached her, and Lucille clenched her fists, internally on edge.
âLeave,â she said, her voice low and much firmer than she would have previously thought. âBoth of you. This is not a time to be surrounding me. â
It was interesting to see the ghosts keep their eyes locked on the woman; it was just as interesting to see the hardened, suspicious look come into the manâs eyes, as if he could glimpse past Grantâs smile. Of course, if he was one of the X-Men, he might have been able to, for all that Grant knew. ( To say the thought made him more on edge was an understatement. ) He continued blocking the sidewalk, even at the manâs insistence that they were fine.
The woman practically sparked to life, fists clenched and gaze hard. Grant placed his hands on his hips, closer to the weapons he kept. He did not want to do this the hard way, but it seemed neither of them were willing to let go of their own missions. âAnd whyâs that? You seem to be awfully popular today.âÂ
The whole situation was bizarre, and the smile dropped from Grantâs face. Professional -- his heart did not race, his mind did not wonder. Focused. âIâm not really surrounding you here. In fact, Iâd rather not fight at all. Just trying to hold a conversation, maâam.â He wished Lazarus had given him his goddamn number or something, so that he could text a âhey, totally evaded capture lol!â message. Instead, Grant was left with doing the dirty work again, and it made him feel that spark of anger stir in his stomach. â -- but with an attitude like that, Iâm guessing you arenât an X-Men?âÂ
[pm] What the fuck did you say to Strucker? Why is he asking me about you? I swear to god, Ward, if you mentioned that we're in contact I'll end you.
[pm] You really think I go around talking about you all of the time? Honestly, Watkins â youâre cute, but not that cute. How the hell should I know why heâs asking about me? Maybe itâs my charming personality; maybe itâs because he thinks he can win me back to the great cause.
Did you tell him anything?Â
babysadieblueeyes:
[pm] You know something I donât know? You think the days of SHIELD and HYDRA are coming to an end? I hope youâre right, but Iâll believe it when I see it. And you should know by now that Iâm not one to do something stupid. Not when itâs my ass on the line.
What are you gonna do?
[pm] I do. Sorry that I donât trust you with much beyond that. All Iâll say is that weâre about to find out who we become -- without SHIELD, without HYDRA, without the whole damn world deciding our fate for us. Exciting times. Â
Donât worry, I wonât kill him. I just want to talk. Now, if he tries to kill me, we wonât be such great friends by the end of it.Â

[pm] And what about you? Do you even have a plan? Heâs got resources. If he wants to come after you, youâre fucked. I may not like you, but seeing you dead would just be a waste.
Struckerâs a lot of things, but we both know heâs not an idiot. Heâs smart enough to figure out when someoneâs lying. You may have gotten out, Ward, but I didnât. As much as I hate to admit it, I canât talk my way out of everything. Â
[pm] Of course, I have a plan. I have resources too. Strucker doesnât factor into either of those, so if he comes for me, heâll have one hell of a fight. Look, anyone that works for one of these agencies is fucked, Watkins, but Iâm a survivor. Youâre a survivor. When they burn down, weâll be left to rifle through the ashes -- unless you do something stupid.Â
Then maybe itâs time I paid him a visit.Â
a ruin | grant, kaz, & lucille |Â fubar friday
Grant could not determine if Lazarus was a goddamn idiot or a goddamn genius. All he knew was that the news continued to blare warning after warning (Â the walking dead, they called them -- and how the words sent a shiver down Grantâs spine ), and he was slipping into his jacket with two guns in his pocket to find the man responsible. He had played the devilâs advocate for more than one organization, and if he had to play it a little while longer to slip into Lazarusâs good graces and steal the stone from him once and for all, so be it. For the power he glimpsed on the television, it would be worth it; he could turn both SHIELD and HYDRA to ashes.Â
Of course, he was not the only one hunting down the villain responsible. The X-Men prowled the streets, following the trail of ghosts Lazarus had brought forth. On the surface, he had nothing against the mutant team, but his personal feelings were immediately set aside for the mission. ( How many times had he grappled to gain control of that cold nothingness to keep a clear mind? ) He found Lazarus first, the smug bastard, but two of the mutants were not far behind. All he had to do was keep them occupied long enough to allow Lazarus to slip away once more among the crowd.Â
He stepped out in front of them, stopping them in their paths. âYou seem in a bit of a rush,â he began, easy smile tugging at his lips. His fingers twitched, aching for a gun in hand, but he refrained -- for now. âMaybe I could help you out there?âÂ

[pm] Please, we both know Iâm more than cute. You must have pissed him off somehow. Personally, I donât give a shit. You wanna fuck with Strucker, itâs your funeral. I just want to be kept out of it.
What am I gonna say, Ward? That Iâve been hanging out with a traitor? You might be suicidal, but I like breathing.
[pm] Iâm going to plead the fifth on that one. Look, I can think of a dozen ways Iâve pissed him off, but as for why the sudden interest, that remains another matter entirely. He might be formidable, but heâs not unstoppable -- or particularly subtle. Heâll reveal his plans soon enough.
Then whatâs the problem? We both pretend we donât speak, and thatâs that.Â
debraxmoreno:
Mister Grant Ward doesnât sound like a man who just does general conversation. What a nice change.Â
There isnât much you can do about that one, amigo. Unless you wanted something like Catch Me If You Can.
Maybe you know me better than most already if you picked up on that.Â
Canât say Iâve seen that one, but Iâd have to disagree. Thereâs a lot you can do, although only about half of it is legal.Â
the-satan-claw:
You were never my puppet, Grant. Â I allowed your mentor free-reign where your training and handling were concerned. Â Despite his accomplishments, John Garrett was a disappointment to us both.
Please be assured that I have no desire to endanger a potentially valuable asset. However, if you still require a good reason, then I can have Agent Watkins come and ask you nicely herself.
Perhaps that would be preferable?
I donât see why. I donât exactly care for Watkins anymore than she cares for me -- but fine. Letâs have this meeting. I choose the place and time.

When I said I was bored, I hadnât meant that I wanted to deal with an insane jackass, Ward. Thatâs Leoâs specialty, not mine.Â
So now weâre adding insane to the list? I feel like Iâve really upgraded since last we spoke.Â
of-sais:
Just a moment⌠Not that your recommendation is something I sought. From what I understand, S.H.I.E.L.D had adversaries which ranged from A.I.M to HYDRA. You really think that they could be worse than they were?Â
Yet here I am, giving it all the same. Look, they try to be better -- they even think theyâre better, but are they? No. They all want the same thing: control. And all are willing to bend lines to get it. Itâs naive to think otherwise.Â

You are quite right, Mr Ward. Â We have spent too long engaged in our own, petty conflicts, rather than concentrating on HYDRAâs ultimate aims.
You clearly have some opinions on the faults of our past. Â Perhaps you would care to come in so that we might discuss these thoughts more fully?
Iâve been a puppet of you in the past. Hell, Iâve betrayed you in the past. For all I know, the minute I get within ten feet of you, someoneâs putting a bullet in my head. Give me one good reason why I should come in to discuss anything with you.Â
