Sometimes you do have to tell kids that there’s some things that they’ll learn when they’re older. But then you have to actually follow through and explain things to them when they’re older. Or else your kids will end up like me, who didn’t learn what gay meant until I was 13 and tried to piece it together through news reports and rumors at school and so for a while I thought that being gay meant that your fingers were a certain length.

I saw some news report that claimed you could tell someone was gay by how long their ring finger is and I thought that’s what being gay was for a full 4 years.

I literally got cornered by a gang of mean girls in the bathroom once in elementary school because I wore the color blue a lot and they found that to be unacceptable. You think we had access to gender theory textbooks or something? Some of my classmates literally thought it was physically impossible to have sex if you weren’t married.

i'm not doubting or judging your experience & i don't think you were dumb for simply being a child, but the internet existed in the "early 2000s." there were gay & trans people on tv. i graduated high school in 2005 & i managed to be gay already & have gay friends & be immersed in gay culture. your experience is not universal.

I wasn’t allowed on the internet unsupervised in 2005. A lot of people weren’t. Just because an experience is universal doesn’t mean it isn’t common. My dad, generally a progressive person, thought at that time that being gay was too sexual to explain to a child and that transgender people were gross and not to be talked about. He’s different now. Society is different now. I’m just pushing back on the idea that everyone always had easy access to this information. We didn’t. My grandmother didn’t learn what a bisexual person was until she was 75.

you said they didn't have books about gay people in 2006. i am just pointing out that just because YOU didn't have books about gay people in 2006 doesn't mean they didn't exist.

some of us grew up where it wasn’t safe to be gay, hyenaswine. like congrats that u were a star gay pupil but my guess is you probably were allowed to watch those shows and movies with queer characters, weren’t bullied back into the closet by homophobic students and teachers, and had access to “gay culture.” i grew up in rural missouri. it was quite literally not possible for me as a child to be “immersed in gay culture” bc there was no gay culture in my town. bc you would get run out of town.

they apparently graduated high schook in 2005 so like. cool! great! i didn't until 2014 and i never once had access to any queer resources. my "sex ed" classes were abstinence-only and when the Defense On Marriage Act came around about 80%+ of the voting population voted against marriage equality. The existence of resources is undeniable, but the reality that countless queer people growing up had no access to those resources--a lot of time had no knowledge that there WERE resources--is just as undeniable. the idea that OP and those in this post is just "spreading misinformation" or are somehow being "disrespectful to those that came before us" is laughable.

when i was a kid i thought gay and trans people were one and the same because my mother did a piss poor job of explaining (probs because she didnt quite get it either) and lgbt topics just were not covered in school ever.
