Possible Shangguan Qian hot take: I don't think she would keep her child once she left the Gong family.

Like, most mjty fanfic that I've read seems to a) operate on the base assumption that the child exists and b) not consider the possibility that Shangguan Qian might abort it. And even if we take a as true and also assume that Shangguan Qian wants the child (both of which are big assumptions) I don't really see a world where she would unquestionably keep it.

Because the thing is that Shangguan Qian does not live in a world where she gets things that she wants. If she did, Gong Shangjue would not have chosen the Gong family over her. If she did, Dianzhu would have died after the first attempt on her life.

This is someone who has been raised with the understanding that her body is a weapon. First a weapon for Wufeng and then a weapon for vengeance for her sect. And someone whose body is a weapon does not get to dwell on personal desires and cannot afford to be taken out of commission for the nine months it would take for the baby to be born plus actually taking care of the child afterwards.

Like, I am firmly of the belief that any character action no matter how seemingly ooc can be in character depending on the context. There are definitely plenty of reasons why Shangguan Qian might choose to keep her child (or be forced into it by Wufeng). But for me that is something that should be justified against the baseline assumption that she would not keep it. And honestly I think there's a lot of interesting character work to be done just by asking whether or not she would keep the kid, whatever the answer ends up being.

I've had Shangguan Qian on my mind this evening, and I've contemplated what it is about her that made her so unforgettable to me.

Canon leaves a lot of her true thoughts a mystery, so understandably many different interpretations about her exists. But how I saw her as—how I interpreted her actions, and through her actions her feelings and thoughts—it was all very refreshing. A historical fantasy romance drama woman who can choose to have sex with her potential love interest, and then move on without having fallen irrevocably in love. A character who doesn't sideline her own goals in the end for the main men to reach theirs. A character who chooses freedom and independence over a marriage. A character who doesn't get "fixed" in the end by a relationship and a traditional family. A villainess who gets a happy ending.

But also, there's two things a character can be that I have a special weakness for: living weapons who are femme fatales/hommes fatals. And she fits the criteria.
