Literally sooo upset by BTVS’s decision to put Faith in jail like what is the point of this, is that supposed to make her a better person? A happier one? The show has asserted both that Faith is a product of her circumstances and that the others are not as far as they think or wish from her and can easily slip into similar patterns and have the same capacity for harm, but whilst characters like Angel are allowed the space and resources needed in order to change, to do better and become a better person, and people around them who encourage him to do so, somehow teenager Faith instead needs to be isolated and face punitive action in order to make up for her past and some badness that apparently she specifically harbours. Angel/Faith are one of my favourite mirrors in Buffy especially in ‘Consequences’ because you could see the extent of the comparison working as well as the ways it misses the mark and leads to Angel’s over-identification leading to misunderstanding her which felt purposeful and a conscious decision. But in ‘Judgement’, Angel has to ask Faith about her intrinsic violent tendencies (positioning her as a potential ‘Angelus’, as if those situations can be remotely compared), which at least to me, wasn’t the issue (and what Angel misunderstands about her in Consequences as well), so much as Faith’s belief in her inability to change or have a better life and be a better person (be ‘like Buffy’) which causes her to lash out and traps her in a self-destructive cycle. Literally how is it okay to show that teenager Faith almost got stabbed in prison, is virtually friendless and without support other than apparently the occasional visit from Angel, and got beaten up by the guards, but that she should just shut up and bear it because it’s what she deserves
