I started this project back in my first year of highschool as a short story, which was originally going to be based on the character Renfield from Dracula that I had started in 8th grade, but it was quickly scrapped. (A lot of Alice’s character came from that idea) I knew that I wanted to do a story based on a Victorian novel or Halloween story, because the project I had before the Dracula one was Sleepy Hollow which unfortunately didn’t go anywhere. But then I found Jekyll and hyde, for some reason we never read it in school, but I fell in love with the story and all its complexity’s. It was a story people were familiar with enough and yet had so much potential to add to it. It was perfect. It took me from my second semester of my freshman year all the way to graduation to get it completed, with 3 or 4 different drafts. And in the beginning of writing the first book, I was already writing the sequel, which was a blessing and a curse. Out of anything Ive ever had an idea for, this is the one that I could say I’m proud I stuck with it, it has the potential to be something great, and I really hope others will feel the same.
Book overview
Alice never expected to survive the asylum, much less escape it. Haunted by trauma and hunted by her past, she stumbles through a storm and into the home of a young medical scholar named Henry Jekyll. Kindhearted, brilliant, and quietly burdened, Henry becomes her unlikely refuge in a world that once cast her aside. But beneath his gentle exterior lies a secret that even he struggles to control. As Alice recovers under Henry's care, their growing bond pulls her into the heart of his dangerous research: a serum meant to divide the human soul into its purest good and darkest evil. His obsession with unlocking the truth of human nature begins as noble ambition, yet the consequences soon twist into something far more monstrous. When Henry's experiment gives rise to the violent and unpredictable Edward Hyde, Alice is forced into a battle she never asked for, caught between the man she loves and the darkness he has unleashed. Set in Victorian London, My Mad Scientist blends romance, psychological tension, and gothic mystery into a reimagined tale inspired by the legend of Jekyll and Hyde. It is a story of love tested by madness, identity fractured by science, and the terrifying question of whether the monster lives within us all.
