Snowfall was a tragedy of tragedies. I finished it days ago, and I’m still haunted. It’s honestly a shame this show is too black to get the same kind of attention other dramas get, but when I say the sixth season was a masterpiece, I really truly mean it. I’m tempted to watch the whole series through again because I noticed that so many of the earlier seasons had scenes set outside. This last season was progressively shot indoors and when they were outside, there was this suffocating yellow tint over everything that made it clear that nothing Franklin could do would ever work. And like, I had this moment during the season where I realized that this kid, this protagonist that I was rooting for years had become irredeemable. Even until the very last episode I tried to rationalize his actions, but it clicked that I wasn’t supposed to anymore. He was gone. His own mom even said he was lost!! It’s genius how the writers take us on that journey with his mother who also realizes her son is a monster that she can’t help but sacrifice for up until the end. And idk why I thought a story about a black boy/man in the midst of the crack epidemic could ever be a happy ending for him, but the ending was so brutal. It wasn’t brutal in the way I’m used to though (white character kills off black character). In fact, I got to see Cissy, a black woman, shoot the white cia agent who corrupted Franklin, poisoned the community with drugs, and destroyed her family in the middle of the street! Idk!!! Watching the downfall, the spiral, the parallels between Franklin and his father, his mother silent at the end because what else can she say? Franklin, after losing everything (a real estate empire, the mother of his child, his son, his mother, his father, 73 million dollars, his mind), told Leon that he finally felt free. Guess whose name means “freeman”. I’m losing my mind.
