“Curse? What d’ya mean by curse?” He looks the creature up and down--their appearance doesn’t shock him in the slightest. Over the years, he’s encountered all sorts of beings from different dimensions, so he knows better by now than to react poorly to someone who looks different than himself.

The flashlight beam drops and a bearded face appears over it in the dark, wrapped in shadow--night’s fallen, and the sky is inky black. He’s been walking for some distance, searching for signs of life, and this is the first he’s seen to give any indication that this world, wherever he may be, is inhabited.

“I’m a traveler.” The blond replies, holding the light beam toward the ground so as not to shine in their face. “Who’re you?”

“D…Did the elevator just stop?”

The elevator grinds to a halt--well really, it doesn’t grind so much as it jerks after a few tense seconds of screeching and whining. The whole thing kind of cachunks, and gives out, but thank whatever powers that be, it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere on the track for the time being.

“Certainly looks that way, don’t it?” The stranger asks in his thick southern drawl. He flicks something out of his back pocket, which proves to be a multi-tool of some kind, and bends down with a little groan of popping knees to inspect one of the panels near the door before he starts to unscrew it, curious to see what had gone wrong inside.

“Hard to say why, a million and one things can go wrong with these contraptions.” The man says in a level voice. “But if’n you’re worried, don’t be. If an elevator stops in its track, it’s usually a safety precaution. Means that the failsafe’s workin’ so whatever went wrong with it won’t hurt its passengers.” He chuckles to himself. “They build these things to be as safe as possible.”

Don’t mean they always are, but they do try. He thinks to himself.
