                  But  Pearl  wastes  no  time  indulging  the  quiet,  turning  a  shrewd  eye  to  Marceline.      “ Don't  be  difficult. ”     she  says  mercilessly,  descending  upon  her  like  an  angel  with  sharp  wings.   Kneeling  next  to  Marceline,  she  pulls  from  her  lapel  a  single  grief  seed  and  offers  it  to  her.   You  are  too  soft.   You  grieve  too  much.   You  do  not  know  how  much  I  love  you.     “ Take  it,  please. ”

“ Shoes  off  on  your  way  in,  jedi. ”     She  says  thinly,  beckoning  him  in  with  an  unnecessary  billow  of  the  cloak.     “ You're  already  dragging  in  your  troubles  and  your  blasted  politics;  I  don't  need  you  tracking  in  any  dirt  along  with  them. ”

❝     Hey   .   .   .    P ?     ❞        Her  hair  rolls  over  her  shoulders  in  waves,   bunches  of  cumulus  clouds  at  sunset.   She  idly  plays  with  the  string  of  her  tea  bag,  wrapping  it  around  her  index  finger.       ❝     How’d  you  prepare  for  the  sort  of  life  Steven  was  going  to  lead ?  I’m  trying  to  wrap  my  head  around  it.     ❞       For  her  own  sake,   she  thinks.   She  empathizes  with  the  boy  more  than  she’d  like  to  admit.      ❝     It’s  just  .    .    .   A  big  legacy  to  fulfill,    you  know ?   Living  in  that  light,     not,   uh  .   .   .   Not  knowing  what  comes  next.    ❞       

Filaments  of  sweet - smelling  steam  coil  out  from  their  mugs,  pluming  upward  like  flowers  dressed  in  nothing  but  light.        — Pearl  had  set  out  the  tea  without  a  word.   Serenely,  but  silently.   When  she'd  first  walked  in,  he'd  had  the  intuitive  sense  that  something  was  bothering  her.          (   Fehn  held  herself  as  though  from  an  innerness,  as  though  a  creature  with  a  shell.   It  didn't  suit  her.   )          Pearl  had  set  to  work  on  the  tea  then,  wordless  in  hope  of  coaxing  her  to  talk  to  him,  to  dawn  a  little.   He  knew  very  well  that  humans  often  enjoyed  the  consumption  of  tea  as  a  means  of  comfort  and,  well                          although  he  himself  had  no  intention  of  ever  actually  drinking  it,  he  certainly  enjoyed  holding  the  warm  mug.   So . . .   there  was  certainly  merit  in  that.

Though  he'd  been  expecting  and  waiting  for  her  to  speak,  her  question  catches  him  off  guard.     “ I — ”    It  was  an  unforeseen  turn  of  conversation,  but . . .    not  at  all  one  he  couldn't  oblige.     “                We  didn't. ”

He  lets  that  sit  for  a  moment,  like  it  were  a  confession.   He  supposes  it  must  be.   After  all,  he  would  have  tried  to  deny  it  once.   For  many  years,  it  had  been  a  truth  reserved  for  hushed  arguments  behind  the  temple  doors,  just  out  of  a  still-little  boy's  earshot.   Relieved  at  having  said  it  aloud,  and  having  said  it  to  a  third  party,  he  laughs.   Exhaustively,  but  genuinely.     “ You  should  have  seen  us  when  he  lost  his  first  tooth . . . !                      Let  alone  when  he  sacrificed  himself  to  an  enemy  Homeworld  for  prosecution.   On  both  occasions,  we  were  convinced  of  his  imminent  death. ”

DINAH.        it’s  an  old  name,           STUCK  ONTO  HER  TEETH                                            like  beeswax,              leaving     her     mouth     with     a     sweetened  -  scent     of     freshly     picked     strawberries     on     an     early     summer     morning              .           it’s    a    name    that’s     ancient            &.             so,      so    familiar    to    her    big,       big    heart,      forsaken    to    stay    there    for    the    rest    of    times.                      (        the  kindest  kinds  of  curses,          really,         the  one  she’d  bear  herself  a  thousand  lifetimes  if  she’d  have  to.       )                       no  one  had  treated  her  as  kindly  as  she  did,      and  for  that,      she  was  grateful.                  ❝          i    didn’t    think    you’d    make    it                 (  …  )                but    i’m    glad    you    could    come                       what    changed    your    mind        ?          ❞

The  name  of  the  one  you  love  is  its  own  language,   using  only  the  second  tense.   Only  now,  only  —     “ You. ”

Rose   blooms  into  view  like  a  flower  unfolding.   Pearl   —   who'd  just  managed  to  hoist  herself  through  the  fire  escape   —   lingers  at  the  roof's  edge  upon  seeing  her  there.   In  the  half - light  of  evening,   Rose   seems  to  cast  a  light  all  her  own.   To  Pearl,   everything  else  is  blindspot.          (  only  now,  only  you.  )

Catching  sight  of  her  there,  wreathed  in  the  night  like  a  dream  Pearl  has  had  all  her  life,  she  has  the  dim  and  silly  impression  that  she's  somehow  seen  this  before.   In  another  time,  in  another  place.   In  the  flower - pressed  pages  of   a  children's  tale,   maybe.   A  gallant  knight  having  donned  her  armor   ( a  white  turtle - neck )   to  march  through  the  damp  annals  of  a  dark  dungeon   ( a  downstairs  party )   and  scale  the  crag  of  an  impressive  tower   ( an  apartment  building  )   only  to  finally  reach  —

They look from the shells to Pearl, their smile widening into a grin.      ❝     You  have  a  point.   I  think  the  plants  in  my  office  would  enjoy  their  company.     ❞        

Odet  sighs  through  their  nose  and  chuckles  lightly.   They  adjust  their  glasses,  which  catches  the  light  and  reflects  it  briefly.   Brilliant,  glittering  Atlas,  gleaming  like  the  sharp,  bloodied  teeth  of an  apex  predator.  They  turn  their  head,  looking  out  towards  the  seaside,   the  sun  dusting  their  face  a  beautiful  golden.   How  much  more  peaceful  it  was  here.   How  beautiful,   how  calming. What  secrets  did  a  place  such  as  this  hold ?   What  was  buried  in  their  sands,  their  oceans ?   Or  was  there  nothing  to  be  found  at  all ?    Simply  the  bliss  of  a  beloved  ocean,  a  beloved  city.  Their  expression  softens  into  something  contemplative.

❝     Do  you  like  living  here,   Pearl ?     ❞         they  ask,  their  eyes  holding  a  sense  of  yearning.

All  at  once,  Odet's  eyes  take  on  a  sad  and  mystic  quality.   They  avert  them  then,  staring  evenly  into  the  ocean's  noonblue.   For  a  while,   they  say  nothing  at  all,   though  somehow . . .   somehow  their  silence  sounds  straight  out  of  Pearl's  own  heart.

She  shifts  her  weight,  turning  to  appreciate  the  horizon  with  them.   Out  beyond  the  foamy  shore,  the  edge  of  ocean  shivers  in  sunlight  —  shining  like  magic.   After  a  while,  Pearl's  smile  softens  with  the  ebbing  tide.     “               I  didn't  always, ”     she  admits,  quietly.     “ It . . .   wasn't  the  earth  I  loved. ”

I  am  deeply,  intensely,  and  for - god - knows - how - long  in  love.     I  love  you  with  all  that  I  am,  which  is  a  hell  of  a  lot.     “ Garnet, ”     Pearl  says  between  unstifled  bouts  of  bell - voiced  laughter,     “ Garnet,  that's  —   that's  the  sherry.   You're  about  to  pour  the  sherry  all  over  yourself,  the  —   Garnet,  the  dye  is  right  here. ”

“ Garnet! ”

Love  cannot  live  here.     Rational  thought  dissolves  like  a  mask;  the  air  goes  thick  and  murderous.   Pearl,  the  sum  of  himself  and  a  dream,  stands  small  in  the  wide  expanse  of  White's  light.   Even  in  the  bright  of  day,  White  shines  incomparably,  spilling  her  light  like  a  gutted  star.   Pearl,  filled  with  a  rage  so  big  it  dazes  him,  thinks  her  obscene.     “ You're  what  the  humans  call  a  monster. ”

I  was  born  kneeling,  but  I  am  no  longer  that  me.   I  have  ripped  my  hand  from  your  hand;  I  have  made  it  as  far  as  I  dreamed  I  would.   The  me  that  kneeled  at  your  kiss  no  longer  exists.
