Fabian Arias
Introducing Fabian, security at X Academy. He comes across serious, sometimes brash and sometimes subservient depending on who you are to him, but he's not one to crack a smile often. He's lost, and at 36 is still learning who he is and what he's living for.

fabian is the younger son from a very rich currently unnamed family. he was raised in privilege, which he was utterly blind to, instead resentful and furious at the constant reminders that he was second to, lesser than his older brother, who was set to inherit all wealth.
born in a city which became war-torn when he was a young man, he was drafted into the military where he managed to make something of himself. allowing all cybernetic enhancements recommended to him by his family or his superiors, he immediately stands out with led eyes, a steel jaw and several enhanced (or utterly replaced) limbs. he suffered in the war, in ways he still has not fully come to terms with. but it ended with the destruction of the entire city, at which point he and his family became refugees.
luckily for him, it's very easy to be a rich refugee. they found their way to new jakarta all together, a city which had been uninvolved in the conflict, and his family settled in sora. but adapting to a world of peace, returning to his role as second-best, everything was suddenly wrong. his ptsd diagnosis was treated with bandaids and a glossy finish, and fabian had to fight to understand his own changing needs and identity.
he deviated from his family's control, slowly at first. they didn't need to know that he was getting involved with them; some gangs, some just criminals, some vagrants. it was a world where he felt more real, more like a person. eventually, he met someone (wanted connection) for whom he was willing to lose everything. he spent up all the power he had to his name to help them, and after doing so, his family won't look at him the same way.
he changed his name, not out of an attempt to disown them but out of a desire not to shame them. after everything, there's still that little boy within, craving his family's approval and acceptance. he moved out, took on a job at x academy, and months blended into years. this was the new normal.
he still talks to his family, but sparingly. his purpose is that person who he helped, though he sees himself as little more than a hanger-on in their life.

โYeah, only about a million timesโฆโ Santiโs voice echoed ahead of him as he stepped into the glow of the streetlights. โAnd Iโm not even sure thatโs an exaggeration. Youโve always told me itโs risky to be out late, even before the curfew happened.โ He flashed Fabian a cheeky smile before patting his trusted guard on the shoulder. โLook, I know things have been tough lately, and I wanted to say thanks for sticking it out. So, how about we grab some dinner? If you come along, you can log it as overtimeโIโll personally approve it. What do you say, up for it?โ
He wouldn't admit it, but Santi was desperate for a distractionโanything or anyone would do. His mind was too restless for any coherent thoughts, and it mercilessly kept what little sleep he would normally hope for out of his reach.
โAnd donโt worry about guarding me tonight. Youโre officially off duty.โ Santi now patted the inner pocket of his suit where his gun was concealed. โI can handle myself, at least for tonight. Weโre just hanging out, alright?โ
He started walking through the near-deserted streets of Sora with no particular destination in mind, before calling back, โHey, Fabianโany place youโve been wanting to go to? Nexos? The Mawar Market? I havenโt been there in ages, but I swear the street food there is the best. Might even be better than some spots here in Sora.โ
The second he recognised Santi, relief struck Fabian. He may be his boss, but Fabian had a pretty good rapport with them. Far better than the Overseers, that was for sure. "You know, I wouldn't tell you all the time if you just stayed in," he countered, grinning back at Santi.
The offer was a kind one, and Fabian wasn't sure what to make of it at first. Was it just kindness? Was Santi bored, or paranoid and didn't want to say it out loud? Whatever it was, Fabian wasn't about to say no - he wasn't about to leave Santi hanging. And if they weren't paranoid, Fabian was. Always. So why not keep an eye on him?
Before he could answer, Santi seemed to read his mind. "Of course you can handle yourself, sir," Fabian replied. "I'll... try not to." It was a thin promise, but he meant it. He could try to relax a bit, not look over his shoulder at every turn. "Alright. If it's overtime, I suppose I can put up with you a little longer," Fabian teased. "The Mawar Market sounds great. Something about the desperation in the air really adds a great tang to the food." He's only half joking. "Sounds like a plan, boss. You lead the way."
Veer offered a grin. "I hear it all the time," they said, with shiny eyes as they checked their surroundings before stepping out of the shadow and closer to the stranger. Well, stranger not really. It wasn't hard to spot the security of X Academy. He knew that face by hard from the amount of times he'd been to pick up Rasleen, or to bring her lunch or coffee. They always felt bad for that, using Rasleen as a way to take some peeks at the company, even if they were lacking in insights. The fact that the Grey Lilies kept going under the radar was good though, and while it sparked fear, they did know that if that should end, they'd be one of the first to face an arrest.
"Though not just tonight," they admitted. "I cannot help wanting to break a few rules once in a while," they joked. "And you?"
Fabian raised his eyebrows. Odd to see Veer outside of the office. Some figures you only imagine in one place at one time - but maybe that was Fabian's own lack of imagination.
"I have a permit," he replied, lazily presenting the document he'd had ready. "I'd never break a rule. Far too well-behaved for that." The deadpan humour could easily pass for honesty, and maybe it would. He wasn't all to concerned with how he was perceived - unless it would damage the reputation of Academy X. He had simple priorities.
"But clearly, you would. Don't worry. My lips are sealed." He smiled at Veer, meeting him on his level. "Can't stay cooped up forever, can you?" He paused, surveying the person before him. He was well-mannered, but had a mischievous glint in their eye that spelled out trouble to Fabian. "And I'm sure you'd never break any serious rules, now, would you?"
ใป โฆ ใปย ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ * ย ย ( ย open starter ย for ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ )
For ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐, a lowly third year intern at ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ life had only gotten harder once the ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ sent shockwaves through New Jakarta.
The implications of the stolen drugs weighed heavily on Rasleen, magnifying the tension that permeated the academy's corridors. The theft had not only disrupted daily operations but also plunged the city into a state of unrelenting unrest. Whispers of high-profile involvement and clandestine dealings swirled around her, heightening her anxieties and making each day increasingly precarious. As an intern grappling with mounting responsibilities and the undercurrent of suspicion, Rasleen felt her once peripheral existence now intricately entangled in the city's unfolding chaos. Clutching her datapad, its screen casting a faint glow on her furrowed brow, she braced herself for yet more unpaid labor.
For her lunch break, Rasleen sought solace in the Tiny Templeโs pagodas and teahouses, a rare haven from the city's relentless pace. The garden where she took her brief respite was a tranquil oasis, its softly rustling leaves and the gentle clinking of ceramic cups composing a soothing symphony. Seated on a wooden log, Rasleen diligently circled missing inventory items on her datapadโa relic reminiscent of archaic spreadsheets. The device's screen protector shielded her from the holographic wingspans of birds that occasionally flitted into view. As she nibbled on quince-berriesโan insufficient repastโtheir delicate sweetness mingled with a faint electric tang, reminiscent of caffeine's effect. The fruitโs aromatic complexity, with a hint of citrus, provided a small comfort amid the turmoil of her daily life.
As she savored these fleeting moments of reprieve, a pang of anxiety seized herโthe fear of being observed outside the security of the headquarters. The approach of a figure stirred palpable tension within her. Instinctively, she shut down her datapad, its screen fading to black with a soft click, and forced a polite, albeit strained, smile as she prepared to greet her visitor. The dread of being seen working outside the HQ cast a persistent shadow over her otherwise serene surroundings.
"I feel like I know what you're going to ask meโฆ and the answer is yes, the quince-berries are ripe enough to eat." She revealed a wrapping of her own picked berries next to the log beside her. "Go on, you can take a couple."
Fabian smiled back at Rasleen, but dropped it fast. He didn't meant to be unpleasant, but right now, a smile was a concerted effort. "Good to know, I suppose. Wouldn't want you getting a stomach ache on the job. Think I'll pass, though." He looked up, and around, surveying the area to gauge the security, as if there was danger of an enemy army charging through the pagodas. "You're not meant to be working outside the office without reporting it, you know."
She knew. There had been a company wide corporate speech since the god-forsaken event. He also understood that looking at a datapad was hardly work, hence the sympathy on his face, the reluctance in his tone. "If there was a leak, it'd be my ass on the line."
He walked closer, looking at the quince berries. He admired the initiative, finding a relaxing space, eating a treat, taking a breather. He wished he was capable of it. "It can't be the worst thing in the world, though, right? There are better things to do than work." He turned back to her. "Maybe you could... read a book. Or something."
X Academy was fast on getting him an exemption to the Sora curfew, which was great, but Fabian didn't much enjoy anxiously looking over his shoulder every night as he left work in the small hours of the morning, waiting for an Overseer to corner him, demanding the documentation. Their scrutiny was hardly something he relished. Clinging to the papers in his pocket, he vaguely wondered if it made him look more suspicious as he left the office.
It was an embarrassing time to be security at X Academy. Did it make it better or worse that he'd had no idea there was a theft going on until it was too late, and he was chasing down figures too close to the escape to ever reach? Having gone over everything a thousand times now, witnessing the suspicion from his employers with every new revelation, everyone seemed at least convinced that there had been no predicting it. It wasn't much of a comfort, though. He expected better of himself - and X Academy should be able to, as well.
Usually the only movement at this time of night was Overseers, so when he heard a sound, he prepared himself to present his permit. But still his whole body went tense. He hadn't liked encountering souls and bodies on his way home from work regardless, but this new tension in the air... he closed his eyes, practicing old military routines of forcibly relaxing his tension, as he glanced over to gauge the situation.
"I hear it's risky, being out this late at night. Did you hear about that?"
