ROAD MEMOIR is a podcast opera. It combines a solo soprano, spoken text, music and sound design and tells the fictional story of an individual's journey from normal civilian to displaced refugee. ROAD MEMOIR is written and composed by Martin Ward, it features the voice of Billie Robson as the young woman and it is presented in association with the Tête à Tête Opera Festival. It will be podcast on Monday lunchtimes from July 24th to October 9th 2017.

Anna Meredith: Five Questions

Making her live U.S. debut earlier this month was British composer and electronic performer Anna Meredith, who last year released the great Varmints to loads of critical acclaim. Meredith has classical training (read: an intimidating C.V.) and pop sensibilities, but it’s her ability to take inspirations from both worlds and combine them to make a unique sound that’s making her a must-see for me at Big Ears Festival, which SILY is proud to be covering for the third straight year. Meredith’s music is, primarily, dance music, and early reports on this side of the Atlantic are that she uses her and band’s many musical and instrumental talents to make music that’s simultaneously ear candy and viscerally loud, compositions that are catchy and complex.
I was able to ask Meredith five questions over email earlier today. Read her responses below.
Since I Left You: How are you adopting your songs live on your current tour?
Anna Meredith: Everyone in the band is such an amazing player - we’ve tried to find space to showcase what they all can do so everyone sings, as well as moments which show off their individual virtuosity. I’ve adapted the electronic to give some space to their talent.
SILY: You’re a perfect fit for Big Ears Festival because you seamlessly combine pop and experimental music, the cerebral with the physical. Do you take a similar approach to playing your songs live?
AM: I don’t massively adapt our show for particular contexts because I feel it sort of is it’s own beast, and we like to bring a lot of energy whenever we play whether that’s a concert hall or a pop festival, early in the day or late at night.
SILY: How was playing SXSW?
AM: It was AMAZING - we had a great time and a great response to our gigs. It was brilliant to see that despite all the competition and amount of amazing music going on that we saw lots of people coming back to see us.
SILY: Last year, you led a residency for young female artists. What did you take from that experience?
AM: I like to encourage female music-makers to see their music through from inception to performance as I meet a lot of young female musicians who aren’t confident about production and want to encourage them to give it a go and work it out on their own terms.
SILY: What’s next for you?
AM: It’s a busy year ahead with lots more touring as well as my regular commission work and I’ll be gearing up for writing the second album during the second half of the year.

There’s been widespread praise for Anna Meredith’s debut album, 'Varmints', now out on Moshi Moshi Records/PIAS. The genre-defying tracks from the album have been getting airplay across the BBC network on Radio 1, 3, 4 and 6, and in the US the album was premiered on NPR, attracting extensive interest. Anna and her band will be touring the album with live shows in the UK (including a sold-out launch party at the ICA, London), Holland and Slovakia, and they’ll be appearing at Latitude and The End of the Road festivals this summer.
