We are in a very dangerous period. We are in danger of destroying ourselves, and I have a great fear about this ... The older generation is ruling ruthlessly. I feel that this is a terrible threat to our civilization. It's the greed of huge companies and huge organizations which control life in a kind of a brutal way ... It's gotten worse and worse, somehow, because physical science has given us more and more terrible deadly weapons, and the human spirit has been destroyed in so many cases, so what's the use of having the most powerful country in the world if we have killed the soul. It's of no use.
Alan Hovhaness, Ararat Magazine 1971
The symphony bracket is here!
This is how voting will proceed:
Beginning on September 1, one poll (2 symphonies) will be posted per day. The poll duration will be 7 days.
The reason for the slow posting will be to give voters time to listen, in case one or both symphonies is new to them!
There are 64 symphonies in the bracket, meaning 32 polls.
Happy voting!

Shostakovich 10 (1 submittal)
The second movement omg it’s intense but it’s sooo good. Like Shostakovich channels all his rage against Stalin into a couple of minutes and it’s so good and genuinely terrifying - I was shaking when I saw it live last year
Hovhaness 4 (1 submittal)
It SLAPS SO HARD

And God created blue whales
Unfortunately, they didn’t survive after landing in this spot.
The classical music station I listen to just switched programs for the evening. It’s starting with Holst’s Venus, and promised Hovhaness and Hanson. I’ve watched an episode of Planet Earth and I’m taking down biology notes. This is my quintessential calm night.
