Cohl is in his late teens, an idealist, and a scholar. He is trans. He canât use magic, but is deeply interested in it both for its own sake and for its impact on the history of the region and the world. He really doesnât understand why he is friends with Ricad and Bernid, but he is. He studies magical theory and history.Â
Ricad is a little older than Cohl, but you wouldnât know it from the way he acts. He is cis. He thrives on contention and finds entertainment in causing strife and arguments. He has been excised from several friend groups because of this. Cohl and Bernid are his two latest gladiators. No one knows exactly what he studies.Â
Bernid doesnât say much, or, apparently, think much. He is cis. Heâs a combat specialist. He likes drinking and music, and if he has other interests, no one knows about them. He studies combat and also business. He is older than both his friends by a few years.Â
The hunter is a hunter. They are agender. They are the last hunter, and enjoy surviving. They studied the ways of their people: hunting, respect, survival. They no longer have any friends.

i know you and i only met once or twice, but i liked you. i thought you were a pretty solid guy. i was and am very sorry and a little shaken to hear of your suicide earlier today.
i won't say "i can't imagine what drove you to this" because i have nearly been there myself, and i hope that if you continue to exist, you do so without pain or anguish.
i know we didn't know each other, but i admired your casual nature and the way you knew dylan's thoughts that were totally unknown to me.Â
my thoughts also dwell on your widow, or should i call her your ex wife, and her kids. i really can't imagine what they are going through, although i don't guess it makes any difference to you now. but i can't help but think that she is going to start to think of herself as cursed.
i'm sorry you felt like taking your own life was a necessary step to take, but i guess there's not much to do about it now. i'm sure you will be missed, though.Â
The small arms dealership went silent as a stranger entered. He was humanoid--thank goodness, the shopkeep thought--but wore a strange bodysuit: form-fitting, with a sort of horn on the forehead. It appeared male but with all these species streaming into the sector, who could say?
The customers--regulars who spent all their spare time in the shop--stared, although the stranger did not appear to notice. The suit did not appear to have any kind of sensory apparatus. No camera, certainly no eyeholes. The stranger turned its head, seeming to scan the room, and then approached the shopkeep's counter.
A small whisper of "Tenno" emerged near a corner of the room and quickly spread. Again, the stranger gave no indication that it cared or even noticed. It was examining the rack of pistols on display behind the shopkeep.
"I don't want any trouble, now," the shopkeep said. "We mind our own business out this way."
The stranger looked down at the shopkeep and seemed to stare for a moment. Then it raised an arm, and every pair of eyes in the shop watched as it indicated a pistol on the top rack, the newest design from one of the premiere armorers in the sector.
"It's 18,000 credits," the shopkeep said. He wasn't going to lose out on a customer, even if it was a wanted fugitive who gave him the willies.
The stranger sat a small clinking sack on the countertop. With practiced speed, the shopkeep sorted the various denominations of credit units into neat stacks. The stranger had more than 25,000 in his pouch.
"This is more than enough," the shopkeep said, but the stranger shook its head. It tapped on the clear countertop, indicating the shelves of ammunition stored there.
"Oh, of course," the shopkeep said. "Do you have a preferred brand? I have a special deal..." He stopped speaking, since the stranger was giving no reaction whatsoever. He retrieved the pistol and removed the merchant's lock from it, and stacked the appropriate amount of ammunition beside it.
The stranger holstered the weapon and extracted the ammunition, which was something of an uncommon sight--most people simply carried their ammunition away. But the stranger didn't seem the type. It gave the shopkeep a small but formal bow and left the shop, to the collective relief of everyone inside.
This short piece is basically just me chasing plot bunnies and exorcising bloodlust.
Pretty big warning for blood, drugs, sexual predation, and uh...dudes eating dudes. (ha ha! innuendo.)
Slightly related: I think this is just gonna be a general writing blog for the forseeable future, but i'm keeping the url the same, because i like it.
Anyway, story.
âPlease...make me one of you...make me strong, perfect...â The young manâs whisper was ecstatic, the drugs in his system making him euphoric and unafraid. Peyton looked across the room at James, seeing the smirk on the older manâs face. What did this stupid runt think he was here for? But he went along with the boyâs hypnotized ramblings.
âMaybe, maybe...but thereâs something I need you to do for me first,â Peyton said. The boy paused in his ministrations, his glazed eyes meeting his masterâs.
âAnything, anything...just make me like you...make me perfect...â
Slowly, Peyton brought his hand to the boyâs neck. His blood coursed lazy and hot under the skin. Peyton slid his fingers back around the boyâs head, and gripped his straw-blonde hair.Â
Then, swiftly and without warning, he took the boyâs chin in his other hand and twisted it around sharply, breaking the boyâs neck like twisting the cap off a soda. It didnât kill him immediately--Peyton hadnât accidentally popped anyone in ages. The boy lay spread-eagled and helpless, gasping and twitching between Peytonâs legs. Peyton kicked lazily, and the limp body skidded towards James, who was already walking forward, saliva trailing down his bristly chin.
Peyton pulled his pants back on and stood up, moving to meet James at the inert body.
âReady to eat?â Peyton asked.
âI thought Father taught you not to play with your food,â James said, hunkering down and tearing one of the boyâs legs off at the knee, wrenching it at the ankle. Bone cracked and blood spurted a trail several feet long across the concrete.
âIt makes them relaxed,â Peyton said. âAnd that makes the meat more tender. PlusÂ
theyâre so funny when they think they can become one of us, donât you think?â Peyton gripped a bicep and ripped the muscle whole from its moorings. Blood welled and pooled around the rapidly dying boy as the two men bumped their fists together in a grotesque parody of a toast before setting into their meal. Peyton took measured bites and chewed thoughtfully, his grey eyes watching the boyâs eyes, which he would split with his brother, go dark. James held his portion like a turkey leg at a Renaissance Faire, relishing the well-used muscle and tendon of the lower leg. He did not waste time on conversation, having not eaten in a week and a half. His system could handle much longer without food, of course, but every vampire got antsy after several days. As their father often said, they were slaves to nothing but the hunger, the blood-hunger.
James and Peyton spent several hours feasting on every soft piece of the young man. He had been a runaway, as all of Peytonâs marks were. He had chosen people who wouldnât be missed for years, ever since he saw a cousin get blown away by police fire because someone had been tracing his pattern of meals. James was indifferent to the pattern, but he did have to admit that it was easy food. Peyton would distract the chosen meal, somehow always knowing which ones were runaways and cast-outs, and James would slip the homemade tranquilizer/aphrodisiac into their drinks. They would all leave together and the runaways would never be seen again.Â
Sometimes Peyton liked to gain their trust, like with tonightâs meal. Other times James would snap the neck as they walked into whatever disused warehouse or parking garage they happened to be using as a cafeteria.Â
James licked the last morsel of flesh off of a femur and tossed the bone into his pile, which was roughly equal in size to Peytonâs, although Peyton had taken the pelvis and given the skull to James. Other than the bones, all that was left of the boy was the tightening of the brothersâ shirts over their stomaches, and the wide smear of blood. In a few minutes, that was gone as well, licked from the bare concrete with rasping tongues.Â
James wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and burped.Â
âIt was indeed very tender,â he said. Peyton moved sleepily to look at his brother.
âI told you it would be. Itâs the hormones.â The younger vampire was already half-asleep, like a cheetah after eating an entire antelope. James was a bit more husky, however, his Appalachian blood and upbringing making him more of a long-haul player. Peyton had been raised in cities: New York, Portland, San Francisco. He was every bit as scrappy as his older brother, and quicker, but in short bursts. Peyton was Jamesâ favorite sibling, and theirs was a large family.

Years and years ago, I wrote out some opening lines for other people to use to get them started on their novels. Here they are again. Feel free to use them.

As I would later learn, the old man at the bus stop was not communicating through American Sign Language, but rather was placing upon me an elaborate and horrible curse.

Things have been unexcusably quiet here for a while!
I mean, unless major depressive episodes are a valid excuse.
Anyway, I'm working on plotting out the rest of the story today! And I am also going to try to plan out my NaNo writing schedule. (I'm thinking three hours in the morning and three in the afternoon. Plus whenever else I feel like it.)
Old Capital/King's College: The seat of the Mage-King, and the largest city on the Eastern half of the continent. The city is located north of Broken Hill College, west of the Slow River, close to the foothills of the Ice Mountains. Fun fact: the Old Capital was the top city of the old Empire, and only certain parts of it have been reinhabited under the Mage-King's rule. Much of it remains in ruins, although continuous efforts to rebuild are in effect.
Headland College: A mage's college near Harbortown, on the southern headland of Harbor Bay.
Various unnamed villages.
I've also worked a bit on outlining the borders of the city-states, of which there are only four, at the moment. They are Kingsland, Cumber, the Coast, and Telvon.

I have six very rough and very short chapters written already, but those were written more or less off-the-cuff, and grew entirely organically from my starting vision.
But now that I've got a bit of a foundation, it's time to plan out the rest of the story! and that's mostly what I'll be doing today.
I have planned out a little bit beyond the immediate point, and I also know some things that will happen much later in the story. But I have to bridge those points! Thus, planning.
The other thing I worked on today was a map for my as-yet-unnamed story setting.
It's fairly large, probably Russia-sized, or maybe a bit bigger. The northern edge borders on the arctic zone, and is bounded by a bigass mountain range called the Ice Mountains--because they're always snowcapped and the only thing beyond them is more snow.
Telvon, Anarise's hometown, lies near the foothills of these mountains, within sight of the Frozen Sea and the Regular Sea (that's not actually it's name) on the eastern side of the Continent. Whitehold College, where Anarise studied magic, is a few miles to the north. The river Telv comes out of the mountains, running too swiftly to freeze even in the coldest winter, and so Telvon (and, by extension, Whitehold) remains amply supplied even in the depths of winter.
Farther south down the coast, in more temperate climes, is Harbor Bay, and the port city of Harbortown, the largest city east of the Slow River. Harbortown is a port city, and sees a great deal of traffic and trade from all over the Continent, and across the Sea as well.
Northwest, and inland, from Harbor town is Clearspring Mountain, a lone peak famous for a spring of clear, pure water that bubbles up from the depths of the earth, and flows into a small river which eventually empties into the bay. There is a small village at the foot of the mountain.
Nearly due west (and quite some distance away) lies the village of Riverwatch, one of the first places Anarise comes to visit. Riverwatch is small and dusty, remarkable only for its large and impressive watchtower, a remnant of the system of beacon fires that formerly ran the breadth of the Continent, in the days of the last great Empire.
Downriver from Riverwatch is Cumber, a goodly-sized trade town which straddles the river on both sides. And west from Riverwatch, along the old road, is Broken Hill College, where Anarise reappears in the Material Plane, and where Igdir Spellsword resides as a functionary of the Council and teacher of magic.
That's all I have for now! I'm extremely liable to add more locations later, as I flesh out the world more. If I still had my scanner, I'd post my green-ink drawing, but unfortunately my brother took that with him to school, and my digital drawing skills are nonexistent.Â
