𝐂𝐄𝐑𝐔𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐍  𝐇𝐔𝐄𝐒  𝐖𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐍  𝐈𝐍  𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐄  to  the  frantic  pleas,  his  immediate  instinct  to  dismiss  the  offer  as  a  mere  ❛  joke  ❜  dying  on  his  tongue  as  Takumi  couldn't  help  but  stare  at  Eito.  The  other  stumbles  over  his  words,  but  he  immediately  fixates  on  the  word  ❛  friend.  ❜

It's  such  a  tricky  word,  especially  when  applied  to  their  specific  relationship.  Friend,  enemy,  and  everything  in  between  —  none  of  those  words  really  fit  in  their  brand  of  complexity,  yet.  .  .  Takumi  smiled  nevertheless.  Gently  he  placed  his  own  hands  on  Eito's  arms,  careful  to  be  light  in  the  touch  in  case  he  accidentally  makes  this  worse.

❝  I  was  kidding,  Aotsuki,  I  promise.  Even  with  the  Revive-o-matic  around,  we  shouldn't  just  kill  ourselves  so  easily.  ❞

It's  easy  to  say  such  words,  it's  as  easy  as  avoiding  thinking  about  death  too  much.  It's  easy  for  them  to  die,  but  not  so  easy  to  continue  on  living.  He.  .  .  he  had  almost  given  up  on  life  not  too  long  ago.  The  ugly  truth  of  their  reality  had  nearly  swallowed  him  whole,  and  Takumi  had  been  content  then  to  wallow  in  despair  until  something  came  around  to  kill  him  permanently  —  but  such  sentiment  has  been  cast  away  in  favor  of  drowning  himself  in  the  only  purpose  he's  ever  known.

𝐇𝐄'𝐋𝐋  𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐓  𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐘𝐎𝐍𝐄  𝐍𝐎  𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐑  𝐓𝐇𝐄  𝐂𝐎𝐒𝐓.  And  the  moment  he  accepted  Eito  back  into  their  group,  that  meant  he'll  protect  him  too.

❝  Sorry,  that  really  was  a  stupid  joke.  I  guess  we're  both  really  bad  with  humor,  aren't  we?  ❞  Takumi  finally  tears  his  gaze  away  from  Eito  to  stare  at  the  fence  behind  him;  it's  rather  tall,  but  not  impossible  to  climb  over.  It  could  be  a  little  bit  more  dangerous  for  Eito  to  attempt  it  given  his  blindness,  but  if  the  other  was  actually  looking  to  jump  off  the  roof,  then  a  small  injury  prior  wouldn't  be  much  of  a  deterrent.

Slowly  but  surely,  his  hands  trail  from  Eito's  arms  to  his  hands,  fingers  laying  over  the  leather-clad  grip  the  other  has  on  him.  The  touch  is  much  too  gentle  for  either  of  them,  but  is  it  wrong  to  desire  something  that  isn't  pain  for  them?

❝  Have  you  had  dinner  yet  tonight?  Or  do  you  wanna  hang  out  in  the  rec  room?  We  should  go  do.  .  .  something.  Anything.  Together.  ❞

Eito  had  made  himself  a  promise  the  day  he  gouged  out  his  eyes  with  his  infuser.  The  pain  had  been  extreme.  He  had  been  losing  blood  steadily.  Laying  on  the  floor  of  his  cage  wondering  if  he  would  die.  Not  caring  if  he  did  but  at  the  same  time  being  so  terrified  that  it  made  him  more  sick  than  the  pain.

There,  in  that  transcendental  moment,  he  promised  himself  one  solid  thing.  One  he  didn't  know  if  he  was  capable  of  achieving  but  one  he  had  already  broken.

𝐈𝐟  𝐈  𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞,  𝐈  𝐰𝐨𝐧'𝐭  𝐥𝐢𝐞  𝐭𝐨  𝐡𝐢𝐦  𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫  𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧.

Maybe  it  could  be  considered  a  white  lie  to  not  let  Takumi  know  the  depths  of  the  despair  Eito  was  still  fighting  against  every  single  day.  Not  just  the  physical  pain  and  exhaustion  from  his  impromptu  surgery,  but  the  mental  strain  of  everything.

The  delicate  touch  on  his  arms  makes  him  flinch.  In  his  mind's  eye,  he  could  picture  the  blood  always  dripping  from  Takumi's  malformed  hand  seeping  into  his  jacket.  An  urge  to  scream  at  him  to  let  him  go  and  to  not  hurt  him  and  to  hit  the  monster  until  —

𝐍𝐨.  𝐍𝐨.  𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭  𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭  𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥.   He  exhales  softly.  Reminds  himself  that  it  was  all  a  delusion  and  hallucination.  He  was  defective.  No  one  else  was  to  blame.  It  was  him.

He  resolves  that  his  little  lie  will  be  allowed  to  continue.  Until  Takumi  takes  his  hand  in  his.  It  is  so  gentle.  As  if  Eito  is  something  to  be  touched  delicately.  As  if  he  can  break  him.  No  one,  not  even  in  his  false  memories,  had  ever  cared  about  hurting  him.  Or  maybe  that  was  also  a  delusion.  But  the  bruises  and  drugs  and  procedures  seemed  too  real,  even  though  he  knows  it  was  all  a  lie.

He  squeezes  Takumi's  hand  a  little  too  tightly.  As  if  he's  afraid  it  was  already  going  to  end.  Despite  his  mind  screaming  at  him,  he  has  to  admit...  It's  nice.  He  doesn't  actually  feel  gross  when  he  forces  himself  to  think  of  what  he's  actually  feeling.

Crying  is  possible  without  eyes.  It  burns  his  healing  self  inflicted  wounds  more  than  it  would  burn  his  eyes,  for  certain.  And  he  is  happy  that  he's  hiding  behind  dark  shades.

"Takumi-kun,  I....  I  wasn't...  I  really  was  going  to  jump  on  my  own.  I  lied  about  it  being  a  joke.  I'm  sorry."  He  doesn't  want  to  talk  about  his  feelings.  Even  that  confession  felt  like  his  chest  was  being  ripped  open  and  acid  was  being  poured  inside  of  him.

"I  just...  I..."  His  voice  trembles  with  a  trace  of  the  tears  wanting  to  spill.  He  can't  do  this.  He  can't  he  can't  he  can't.  He  needs  to  run  and  hide.  He  needs  to  do  anything  but  he  a  burden.  To  make  Takumi  regret  letting  him  stay  or  sparing  him  all  together.  He  would  clean  the  school  even  without  his  eyes,  cook  even  if  he  cut  and  burned  himself  by  accident.  He  would  fight  and  die  a  hundred  times.  He  just  didn't  want  to  not  be  useful.  If  he  can't  be  loved  by  them,  he  could  at  least  be  useful.  Surely  that  wasn't  too  much  for  an  empty  shell  like  him,  right?

"I...  I  haven't  eaten."  He  could  feel  the  warm  tears  dripping  down  his  cheeks.  He  wanted  to  run  away  and  hide  under  his  bed  like  he  used  to  as  a  child.  "I  can't  do  anything...  I  just...  I  don't  know...."  He  needs  to  get  away.  He  lets  go  of  Takumi's  hands,  the  lump  in  his  throat  preventing  his  apology  from  coming  out.

Why  does  Takumi  want  to  spend  time  with  him?  Why  is  that  so  terrifying?  He  just  wants  him  to....  To...  Care  about  him.  He's  so  selfish.  He  doesn't  deserve  it.

"I haven't sold my soul for anything! I didn't ask for any of this!" He snaps, voice breaking as bitter tears sting at his eyes. Everything was falling apart around him, his mind threatening to plunge into inescapable despair - the only thing keeping him from completely shattering the vague hope that he could still stop this. Eito hadn't completely taken over his body yet - there was still a chance... "This war, all this death - I didn't want any of this! None of us did! All I want is to protect my friends from monsters like you!"

He  had  truly  thought  Takumi  was  different  when  he  first  spared  him  in  the  gym.  He  knew  humanity  better  than  anyone.  How  vile  and  dangerous  they  were.  How  they  wanted  to  cast  out  and  destroy  anything  that  didn't  benefit  them.  That  didn't  conform  to  their  standards.  He  had  been  excited  to  understand  and  unravel  Takumi.

But  he  ended  up  just  being  another  useless  human.  A  dog  on  humanity's  leash.  Any  potential  he  had  smothered  under  the  order  of  an  authority  and  they  hate  he  felt  for  Eito.  He  had  run  away  and  that  made  him  angry.  He  should  have  just  sat  there  and  waited  to  be  executed  when  they  went  back  to  the  TRC  like  a  good  broken  prisoner.

He  would  rather  kill  Eito  in  anger  than  learn  the  truth  humanity  was  hiding  from  them.  How  disappointing.  But  Eito  was  used  to  being  let  down  by  now.

Takumi  panics  even  more  and  Eito  chuckles  at  it.  He  was  so  incurious.  So  stupid.  Eito  couldn't  help  but  laugh  at  him.

"Oh  please.  Sirei  wanted  you  to  kill  me  before  I  could  tell  you  the  truth.  Anything  for  humanity,  right?  You  murdered  me  after  I  was  disarmed  and  injured.  Who  is  the  monster,  Takumi-kun?  I've  never  murdered  any  of  your  friends."

He  would  say  he'd  never  killed  anyone.  But  that  was  a  lie.  He  killed  several  people  before  he  arrived  here.  But  that  didn't  matter  right  now,  did  it?

"So  your  grand  scheme  is  to  kill  yourself?  I  won't  let  you  do  that,  Takumi-kun.  I'm  giving  you  one  more  chance  to  come  to  your  senses  before  I  start  having  to  use  force."  He  was  getting  stronger.  Controlling  Takumi's  body  would  come  to  him  with  time,  but  he  could  at  least  do  something  to  stop  him  from  leaving  the  academy  and  ending  his  own  life.

"What?! No!" Even as Eito begs him to leave, blood pouring from the wound in his leg, Takumi doesn't consider that an option for a second. Not after everything they'd been through together, not when he'd already sacrificed Nozomi for the sake of peace on Futurum. What would be the point of all of this if he just kept losing his friends, one after the other? He couldn't take it - he wouldn't give up so easily.

"Takumi-kun..."  He  wants  to  the  other  to  see  reason.  The  wound  to  his  leg  is  deep,  large,  and  gushing  blood.  He  can't  put  any  weight  on  it  at  all.  The  level  of  pain  is  telling,  considering  his  high  tolerance  to  such  things.  He's  broken  out  in  a  cold  sweat,  shaking  from  the  aching  wound.  His  blood  pours  out  in  a  thick,  troubling  stream.  He  mentally  tries  to  recall  the  arteries  in  leg.  How  dangerous  a  wound  to  it  could  be.

Takumi,  of  course,  was  too  kind  to  abandon  him.  Even  if  it  was  the  logical  thing  to  do.  The  ugly  monster  snakes  his  arm  around  his  body.  They  are  on  a  battlefield.  Every  second  Takumi  is  focused  on  him  is  a  moment  he  could  be  killed  due  to  his  attention  being  away  from  the  conflict.

He  lets  out  a  soft,  muted  whimper  as  he  raises  to  his  feet.  It's  humiliating  how  he  has  to  lean  on  the  other.  How  he  can't  put  any  weight  on  his  leg  without  wanting  to  scream.  Takumi  is  still  so  gross.  So  horrible  to  look  at.  Even  now  he  feels  disgusting  to  touch.  But  with  his  head  swimming  from  the  injury,  he  almost  can't  even  feel  that  repulsed.  He  knows  it  is  only  in  his  head,  of  course...  And  yet...

He  leans  on  him.  He  doesn't  want  to  admit  how  terrified  he  was  to  die.  How,  despite  the  ugly  feelings  of  disgust  and  frustration  the  other  is  giving  him,  he's  happy  to  lean  on  him.  To  not  be  alone.  If  anyone  was  going  to  see  him  like  this,  at  least  it  was  him.  His  most  hated  favorite  monster.

❝  I  don't  think  so,  Aotsuki-kun,  but  thank  you  for  asking.  ❞   A  soft  smile  as  she  glances  up  at  the  sun  shining  overhead.   ❝  I  read  about  something  called  'pollen'  back  in  the  TRC,  it's  a  particle  derived  of  plants  that  often  causes  people  to  sneeze  without  being  sick.  ❞

Such  things  were  essentially  non-existent  from  the  residential  complex  due  to  the  lack  of  natural  plants,  but  it's  yet  another  phenomena  that  Nozomi  was  excited  to  witness  for  herself  now  that  she  was  on  Earth's  surface.

"I  hope  you're  right.  It  wouldn't  be  good  if  any  of  us  got  sick."  The  idea  of  it  made  him  feel  like  throwing  up.  He  was  already  struggling  to  be  around  these  vile  creatures.  But  seeing  even  more  awful  fluids  pouring  out  of  them  would  be  too  much  for  him.  He'd  have  to  hide  away  until  they  all  recovered.  He  couldn't  take  it.  The  idea  of  their  loud  voices  coughing  and  sneezing.  Spit  and  snot  tainting  the  academy.  He  knew  none  of  these  beasts  would  actually  quarantine  or  stop  the  spread.
