Kendall didn’t want to dance around and pretend that he had invited Rava to this nice restaurant near Central Park just so that they could talk. For a moment, he glanced at the non-alcoholic cocktail near his right hand and then the half-eaten plate of crab right in front of him. “I’ve met someone,” he said ripping the Band-Aid off. “And it’s, uh, very serious.”
she watches him, the way only someone who’s known you for half your life can. it shouldn’t be described as knowingly, but maybe expectantly. like she’s waiting for the shoe to drop, waiting for the bad news, because it always comes. perhaps she has started expecting the worst from him, and she knows somewhere in the back of her mind that isn’t fair. but it is what it is, he’s made his bed.ex-wife blinks, once, twice.
" oh. " it comes out of left field a bit, but the surprise only flickers over her features before she collects herself. she reaches out gently, cups her hand over his and smiles. " that . . . that's good, ken. " a beat before she retreats, let's him go. " serious, huh ? do the kids know ? " friendly, perhaps a bit teasing, but there's something under it, a curious sort of protectiveness for her children, their children, figures that has something to do with this.
irritation lingers across rava's features. she pushes it back, weighs it down with reminder that she should give him a chance to explain himself, shouldn't assume the worst. ( though who could blame her, when the worst is often the case with him. )

it may not be what he said, but it's what he meant. she knows him well enough by now. ex-wife sighs, an exhausted sort of sound. " then what did you say, ken ? " she questions a bit harshly, tone a bit too sharp in @rejectory's direction. she is trying to be kind, but energy only goes so far, even when she tries to make it seem limitless.

roy family functions are always a shit show, though rava herself tries to be cordial, she tries to be polite when she can be, and usually she gets out unscathed, or at least minimal injuries to her pride. she'd learned early not to take it personally, and a majority of the time she doesn't. but there are times some of them know just how to twist the knife.

she runs a hand over her face, back through her hair, takes another breath. rava stands firm between him and the kids, is trying not to let this become too much of a display. they’ve fought enough in front of iverson and sophie for a lifetime and she’s tired. ( not for them, she will never be tired of fighting for her kids. but rather working to regulate her emotions and his. ) she needs to recenter them, needs to pull ken away for this discussion but it’s heated, and she knows guiding now will be seen as pushing. the physical separation she is creating now is almost too far, a divide of us and him. “ can we not do this, here. not infront of the kids, okay its. . . ”
she blinks, squints at him for a moment : what the fuck ? he’s upset, he’s allowed to be upset. “ their comfort ? you don’t think i asked, ken ? sophie was terrified because of an incident in the street, that you knew about, that i told you about, and you couldn’t spare five minutes for a phone call with our daugher. but protests walk the streets, riots take place and you want her in a room full of strangers right next door . . . for her comfort ? ” she counters, gesturing at sophie and iverson behind her, a reminder they’re here. they’re listening.

GREG IS AN IDEALIST. it’s a secret, though, one he keeps close to his heart. this isn’t fucking charles dickens’ world, he’s been told. it’s the hope that kills you, and this family wants him fucking dead. wants every member dead, really — sinks its claws into you and sucks the life out of you along with your “morality”. ( grandpa ewan warned him about this : the family is a snakepit, there’s still some good in you, somewhere. maybe it died with the glimmer of optimism he once possessed. maybe he shredded it with anything and everything cruises. he doesn’t know anymore. ) wouldn’t know goodness if it looked him dead in the eyes.
kendall is, at his core, probably a good person. he doesn’t know that anymore either. he doesn’t know that you can call anyone a good person — rava included, unfortunately. ( he’s not been privy to any arguments : thank god, he’s heard his fill of marital un-bliss as a child. ) BUT SHE’S KIND, and that’s got to count for something, especially when she pulls him out of his thoughts gently. ’ yeah, uh, ’ he stumbles, baby blues wide and apologetic. WHAT ARE YOU APOLOGIZING FOR? you’ve done nothing wrong! ’ i’ve realized that … cutthroat - quickdraw, and all that, that fun stuff. it’s hard to keep up, isn’t it? ’

" whether he takes that as a compliment or not is up to him, how good someone is at being a roy. he's doing better than she did, surely. she can't say she's the same as greg, she has no interest in waystar, in logan, the younger roys though . . . she cares for them, kendall especially. she was taught at a young age that injustice is to be fought, she'd learned it early, practice came in the form of a a boy pushed down on the schoolyard, a reprimand from teachers, uses that as stepping stone for who she is now. or tries to. it gets blurry sometimes, the lines she believes make her a good person, the lines that make them . . . not so good.
