Dreamy day out at the bayshore, some chatting and some fishing. Kodak Gold 100 Nikkormat with Nikkor 43-86mm laundry soap
Josh Berger's film "Apnea." It's really interesting how these films are combining in a long program, with the police sirens and Ubers honking in the background. This movie is carving out a quiet tense space.
I am so proud of you folks. Sitting in a standing-room-only crowd, experiencing some amazingly innovative cinema, and the audience is so attentive you could hear a pin drop. I am really glad you all took creative risks!
Experimental Doc Workshop Screening TONIGHT!
Thursday, May 19, 2016
7:00 at ATA, 992 Valencia St. @ 21st St, SF FREE
17 short film portraits. The works are very diverse, as always, and some of the standouts include: a sensitive peek into a young man's decision to work in adult film; a spirited introduction to an artist who transforms models into uncanny 'live paintings"; and a stunning lyrical work that takes place entirely within Call of Duty's cinematic vocabulary.

From Liz Keim's "In The Red" - wow, we SF people were so nihilistic.
Craig is presenting right now, and giving background for an epic show of 80's alternative film and video screening. Many of the makers are here. Liz Keim, Marian Wallace, Marc Olmstead, Mindy Bagdon.
March 18 - TONIGHT - VOID CALIFORNIA Screening, 6:00pm
An event associated with the Void California: 1975-1989 event at CCA - Films curated and presented by Craig Baldwin. This event is from 6:00-8:00 pm tonight, a bit early but I will try to get there. Here is the link with more specifics on this month-long show, which examines the nihilistic cultural moment that was San Francisco during the late 70's and 80's. More info here.
This is a project of the CCA's graduate program in Curatorial Studies, and I am sure you will find it interesting to see how these students are putting together an extensive exhibition. My very first film is in the exhibition space, playing round the clock, along with artwork by Raymond Pettibon, Matt Heckert from Survival Research Labs, and artifacts from Negativland. I am sure Craig's remarks will be fascinating.
SAT MAR 12 - OTHER CINEMA at ATA, 992 Valencia at 21st, SF
SUNDAY MAR 13 - "Nexus Projects Us" is a satellite event of the Timeless Motion gallery exhibition currently on view at SOMArts Cultural Center through March 23rd.Timeless Motion is a celebration and convocation of the experimental moving image community that reconfigures the elements of the cinematic form to examine time, image, sound and movement. This special collaborative performance for Shapeshifters includes visual contributions by Timeless Motion artists Paul Clipson, Keith Evans, Kerry Laitala, Kathleen Quillian, Scott Stark and Mark Wilson with sound byJohn Davis. Oscillating between darkness and light, stillness and movement, sound and silence, the performers, through a variety of formats and media, will use their legerdemain to conjure and transform sounds and images in a cinematic séance. Using the syntax of an exquisite corpse, the Temescal Art Center will be illuminated, haunted, fractured and activated through the synchronies of chance operations and the summoning of ephemeral, audio-visual conversations dialed in through magnetic frequencies and celluloid alchemy.

Gloria and other portraits at the Exploratorium After Dark tonight, in their Extended Cinemas program! Here’s a link. Show opens at 6:00 pm, and includes installation as well as screened works.
See you there!
Making a fresh telecine of my first film, in which I made every mistake imaginable. We are now hunting for proper synch marks, because I used hole punches versus a 2-pop. I admit I was very unclear on some of these concepts at the time. I forgot how rugged this film was.
I remember milky from long ago. Hand painted advert in the Nagano arcade, New Year's Eve.
Jeremy Rourke does another amazing custom-made cinematic performance - animation, live music, intricately planned film...how does he do it?!
Kelly Sears will be visiting SFSU for a master class in February 2016!

Phoebe Tooke's beautiful and heartbreaking experimental documentary about the human cost of corporate excess, in this case the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Tiny strips of film taped onto bigger film, silent and beautiful.
