what are the etymologies of the trolls names? i'm curious.
MOD SPEC: OKAY referring to the ooolllddd spreadsheet for this
i want to say in advance that some of the etymologies are kind of. bad. but its been so long i cant imagine changing them
Regara Senhem - Regara comes from "S. gregaria", the desert locust. Regarar also means "to water" in spanish. Senhem comes from Senehem, the locust-headed egyptian god
Goshen Arovbe - Goshen is the town that the israelites lived in that was noted to be unaffected by this plague. kind of a weak etymology imo. Arovbe comes from "arov", which was the word used to describe this plague; it meant mixture/swarm, and is understood as either wild animals or flies.
Selcis Aureus - Selcis is another name for the Egyptian god "Serket," the god of poisons. Aureus is the latin word for Gold, as well as part of the term S. Aureus, a staph infection.
Heketi Ranide - Heket is the eqyptian god of frogs and fertility, and the aim of the plague of frogs. Ranide comes from "ranidae," which is the family of True Frogs
Amonra & Thuose Prigen - the last plague, death of the firstborn was intended for the pharaoh, also depicted as Ra (Amon-Ra). also one of the weaker etymologies. Thuose comes from "Thutmose III", the firstborn of the pharaoh who was killed by the plague. Prigen comes from the word "primogeniture", which means being the firstborn.
Annwyn Murain - Annwyn is the welsh version of the afterlife, and "murrain" is an infectious disease that affects cattle or other livestock.
Pulvis Tylida - Pulvis means "dust," which is what the lice "came" from in the story of Exodus. Tylida is a species of woodlouse.
Calazi Igniss - Calazi comes from "chalazi" which means hail. Igniss means "fire".
Umbras Heltor - Umbras comes from the word "umbra" which means shadow. Heltor comes from "heolstor," meaning "darkness."
Tremia Hypona - her full name is a reversal of the term "hyponatremia", which is a disease in which blood effectively becomes water
uhh lmk if u want the dancestors also lol
MOD MEG:
Yeah man it’s been like, 10 years since these guys were born? Woof. I’ll add a few extra notes of my own!
Selcis’s first name comes from…yeah, Serket! Just like a certain arachnid troll. Because boils conceptually were a bit difficult to implement in terms of character creation, we let Selcis have a broader theme of poisons, medicines and diseases rather than just…boils. Maybe we should have given him cystic acne. His first name also comes from the alchemist Paracelsus in terms of his history of medical chemistry, toxicology, antisepsis and soap (lol).
