This unit is finally coming to end. Being one of the units that I was really looking forward from the very beginning of the semester proved to be one of the hardest and most challenging of the assignments. However having said that, it is one of the most rewarding. Kicking off the semester with an early lead gave our group a head start and plenty of time to develop ideas and come up with various concepts. Starting off from Andreas’ concept of designing a living space where graphic sits, we wanted to create graphic design fit with in a context. However after we started discussing, we started to come to the conclusion that graphic design does not fit within one category and therefore a living space will not serve a good platform for all of the students’ work. There for we started moving towards the work creating the context itself. As regards to group work until the presentation, every individual got his set of skills to the table and together we could split the work load on each member. Gaining speed towards the proposal, everyone started giving in more effort and time and everything started to take shape. After each meeting, as group members we always discussed our current situation and what must come next. I believe that this really helped to keep the team focused, determined and goal oriented. Further more we did various peer reviews on each other’s concepts to help strengthen each concept. Settling on a concept where each individual’s work sets the space was kind of risky in my opinion and it took us quite a while for me, Carl and David to comprehend the concept fully. However as time went by, we got more and more confident in the concept and we started believing that it could be the way forward. However, during the presentation I believe that some individuals had the same problem that we initially had, of thinking that although the concept seemed clever, it gave the impression that there will be no guidance and instead of being a group project, it will be an individualistic project. I believe that this was one of the main reasons that our concept was chosen but came second. As from the same day of the presentations, I went in full blast on the concept that won, giving all the assets that we had to the winning team. I believe that pulling the same end of the rope really did help throughout the process of preparing for the exhibition. Making the winning concept my own really gave a new meaning to working on this project. Starting off as one of Pr members for this project, I started collecting photos and videos to use for the facebook page. Furthermore, me and Daniel started working on the booklet. However after some time into the project, we deemed necessary to help with the construction of the rooms. The manual work was one the fun elements for me during this process, having to do work which is usually not done by graphic design students. Along with helping in the construction of the windows, the laying of the floor and being highly involved with building the pipe structure, I kept taking photos and videos to document this whole process. Furthermore, I kept editing and uploading material on the facebook page, whilst contacting potential sponsors. Making 204 hours overall working on the exhibition space (including an all nighter) makes me feel really proud of giving my ultimate best towards this exhibition. I believe that the visual appearance of the room gets the second place in my priority list, following the most important thing in this unit, teamwork. I believe that in general, this assignment really brought individuals together to grow together. I was surprised by how well everyone managed to pitch in their skills and talents towards one aim. I believe that for future similar projects, if certain individuals decided to put aside their ego and pulled the same rope from the very beginning, wuld have been a better journey with better results overall. However, obviously not everyone is the same, and I believe that the diversity within the classes helped in created a successful exhibition space that could be appreciated by many. Looking forward for the next big project!!
