In 1984, software called Family BASIC was released for the Famicom in Japan, which allowed the console to be programmed using the BASIC programming language via a keyboard connected to a controller port.

Various magazines published source code for original games, many of which featured Mario due to him being one of the included sample graphics. Here is an illustration for a type-in game called "Evil Castle" from a 1988 issue of the micomBASIC magazine.

Materials:

Wire, faux fur, and rags => body armature.

Self-hardening modeling clay (looks like marshmallow, bought on marketplace and called "marshmallow clay" or something like that) => head, gloves, boots + small details like a brooch from Dr. Claw, buttons, and a belt buckle.

Acrylic paints, pastels, Mr. Super Clear => face painting, gloves, boots.

Old unwanted clothes, thrift-store pants, and offcuts of various rags => clothing.

On the making process:

I have a (probably) not-so-great trait — I always like to see the big picture. In hindsight, I could have made my life easier — left the armature in a static near-T pose and draped READY-MADE AND ONE-PIECE pants and a coat over it. But no-o-o. That’s not me. Of course, I immediately glued on the gloves and boots and posed him, thereby dooming myself to the torment of SEWING THE CLOTHES RIGHT ON HIM with a ladder stitch. In the end, it all worked out, but I was really nervous it wouldn't turn out.

Oh, and also — before sculpting the head, I probably made five failed attempts while sobbing. Or something like that.

So yeah.
