They walked into the Institute together. The only person in sight was Alec, sitting at the big screen. 

“Hi.” He spun his chair around. “People were starting to worry about you two, where have you been?”

“Clearing my head,” Luke replied. “Maia convinced me it was time to come home. Are Jocelyn and Clary around?”

“Jocelyn is on patrol with Jace, and Clary is…” he paused, and Maia could tell he was hiding something. Shadowhunters could be so deceitful. “Clary is with Isabelle right now.”

“Oh. Sparring?” Maia asked. She knew enough about Clary to know that would be like her. 

“I’m not sure, honestly,” he said, turning back to his screen. To Maia, it felt like he was avoiding the question. He knew something she didn’t, but didn’t want to be the one to spill the secret. Her thoughts started to spiral, thinking about Clary running off to Isabelle.

“It’s fine, I’ll talk to her later,” Maia scoffed, hurrying out. She heard Alec call after her, trying to explain it wasn’t what she might think, but she didn’t want to give anyone in the Institute any more of her time.
